{"id":11930,"date":"2011-05-06T16:12:40","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T20:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=11930"},"modified":"2014-11-14T15:59:42","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T20:59:42","slug":"in-memoriam-marguarette-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2011\/05\/in-memoriam-marguarette-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"In Memoriam: Marguarette Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Marguarette Johnson<\/strong>, a longtime and valued staff member of the School of Accounting in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), passed away on April 5, 2011.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11931\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tn_MJohnson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11931 \" title=\"tn_MJohnson\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tn_MJohnson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marguarette Johnson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She began her career at FIU as a college work study student in 1979, and was hired in the School of Accounting as a secretary. In 1985, she was promoted to senior secretary, and she became the school\u2019s coordinator. In 2009, she was nominated for four Employee Service and Recognition Awards at FIU:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FIU Knowledge Award: a role model for the pursuit, generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge through professional development, mentorship, and\/or peer development.<\/li>\n<li>FIU Torch Award: exemplified FIU\u2019s institutional values of honesty, integrity and truth by exhibiting the highest standards of character and ethical behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Community Award: supported the university\u2019s mission of promoting exemplary public service and fostering innovation on a project or program that helped to advance the university or the community during the past year.<\/li>\n<li>Presidential Excellence Award: supported institutional, strategic and operational excellence by restructuring processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality; and\/or by implementing critical programs; receiving recognition from peers in the academic community for excellence in research, scholastic or creative activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMarguarette was a great help and provided crucial support to the accounting program, helping professors by proctoring exams, ordering textbooks and any other tasks needed,\u201d said <strong>Mortimer Dittenhofer<\/strong>, emeritus professor of accounting and one of the authors of the 600-page textbook <em>Sawyer\u2019s Internal Auditing: The Practice of Modern Internal Auditing<\/em> and its 400-page instructor\u2019s guide, both of which she typed.<\/p>\n<p>A memorial service took place in the College of Business Complex on June 10, 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tn_Johnson_Memorial.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12550\" title=\"tn_Johnson_Memorial\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/tn_Johnson_Memorial.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>She is survived by her husband, Ulric Johnson; her sister; Elizabeth Burkins; her four brothers: Robert Burkins, Eugene Harris, Gregory Harris and David Harris; her nephews and niece, Michael, Tony, David and Natasha Harris; and her aunt, Barbara Brutchfield.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marguarette Johnson, a longtime and valued staff member of the School of Accounting in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), passed away on April 5, 2011.
