Judges looked at hundreds of nominees\u2019 positions within their companies as well as their responsibilities, career accomplishments and community service.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Clay (MSF \u201905, BBA \u201997), Daniel D. Diaz (BBA \u201994), Monique Hamaty-Simmonds (BBA \u201996) and Juan Ruiz (MBA \u201908) were among the winners recognized at a gala award ceremony on July 28, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13808\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/40-Under-40-Honorees.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13808   \" title=\"40 Under 40 Honorees\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/40-Under-40-Honorees.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This year\u2019s South Florida Business Journal\u2019s \u201c40 under 40\u201d honorees\u2014four of them graduates of the College of Business Administration\u2014were recognized at a gala award ceremony on July 28, 2011.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Lively photographs and bios bring winners to life.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The honorees personalities were captured in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/southflorida\/news\/2011\/06\/24\/40-under-40-honorees-announced.html?s=image_gallery\" target=\"_blank\">photographs<\/a> by Mark Freerks. Along with the images, each had the opportunity to answer conventional questions about his or her background, and unconventional ones that gave readers more insight into them as individuals.<\/p>\n<p>In ten years, 35-year-old Brian Clay, executive vice president\/business banking director, BankUnited, sees himself as the bank\u2019s president, and says that the best advice he received is \u201cUse your talents to the fullest (or else).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel D. Diaz, senior vice president\/market manager, TotalBank, who attributes his success to \u201chard work and honesty,\u201d finds a valuable lesson in the caution: \u201cAccept people for who they are. They rarely change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monique Hamaty Simmonds, president and CEO, Tortuga Rum Cake Co., wants \u201cto create a family legacy by building a $100 million-plus global business centered on authentic Caribbean products.\u201d She credits her grandfather with reminding her that \u201cthe only place \u2018success\u2019 is found before \u2018work\u2019 is in the dictionary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Juan G.
