{"id":14735,"date":"2011-11-21T16:17:09","date_gmt":"2011-11-21T16:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=14735"},"modified":"2017-11-06T15:24:51","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T20:24:51","slug":"one-event-brings-two-awards-to-the-fiu-accounting-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2011\/11\/one-event-brings-two-awards-to-the-fiu-accounting-community\/","title":{"rendered":"One event brings two awards to the FIU accounting community."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the recent XXIX Interamerican Accounting Association (IAA) conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Florida International University (FIU) received the Fra Luca Bartolomeo Paccioli award.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eduardo Mendez (MS\u2019 01, BA \u201996), president of the Cuban American CPAs Association and Foundation, the prestigious award is named after the 15<sup>th<\/sup>-century Italian mathematician, who is dubbed the \u201cfather of accounting\u201d and is credited as having invented the modern-day double-entry system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe award recognizes outstanding performances by and contributions from different areas in the accounting profession&#8212;from institutions of higher education or universities that offer the degree in accounting, to consulting firms who excel in their industry, or to deserving professionals who excel by contributions to or knowledge of the accounting sciences,\u201d said Mendez, who accepted the award on the university\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14737\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14737 size-full\" title=\"CubanAmericanCPA Award to FIU\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/CubanAmericanCPA-Award-to-FIU.jpg\" alt=\"Cuban American CPA Award to FIU\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eduardo Mendez presented the certificate to Joyce J. Elam, executive dean of the business school; Ruth Ann McEwen, director, School of Accounting and Monique Catoggio (EMBA \u201903), director of advancement and alumni relations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Selections are made by geographical region. FIU is part of the North American region that includes all candidates from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were chosen for the consistently high performance of our accounting program and for the high rate of graduates from minority groups within the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Former College of Business Administration School of Accounting professor also recognized.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the same event, the IAA awarded Leonardo Rodriguez, professor emeritus, FIU, the Contador Benemerito de las Am\u00e9ricas<em>,<\/em> the highest recognition given every two years to a member of the association.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14736\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14736 size-full\" title=\"Leonardo Rodriguez\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Leonardo-Rodriquez.jpg\" alt=\"Leonardo Rodriguez\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leonardo Rodriguez with his award<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Founded in 1947, the IAA is an international organization composed of 23 countries from South America, Central America, the Caribbean and Canada. More than 1.5 million accountants are represented.<\/p>\n<p>Mendez noted that the Cuban American CPAs Association and Foundation in Miami holds the membership for Cuba in IAA.
