The \u201cMiami Lady\u201d tour boat became a floating classroom when Suzanne Hollander, who teaches real estate courses in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), took 100 undergraduates, graduate students and alumni on an educational real estate tour on the Miami River on November 4th.<\/p>\n<p>This critical artery of commerce, running 5.5 miles from Miami International Airport to Biscayne Bay, is flanked by a huge variety of commercial and residential properties, scenic parks and multicultural neighborhoods. Happily, real estate professionals were along to make the details of the properties come alive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14751\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14751 size-large\" title=\"Miami River\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Miami-River-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"491\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tour took place along the Miami River.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA thriving 30-story building sits right next to a vacant lot and you wonder \u2018What\u2019s the story there?\u2019\u201d said Frank Halpern, working on his <a href=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/academic-departments\/real-estate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master of Science in International Real Estate<\/a> (MSIRE). \u201cWe had an incredible array of experts to tell us the inside story. What an experience!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw luxury homes, modest homes, high rises, developments, restaurants, office buildings and other commercial properties,\u201d Hollander said. \u201cBest of all, people \u2018in the know\u2019 shared fascinating insight as to the who-what-where-when-and-how of river real estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Area experts share details, insight and perspective.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Hollander, on board, making presentations and answering questions, were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Victor Ballestas, managing director, Starwood Residential<\/li>\n<li>Brett Bibeau, managing director, Miami River Commission<\/li>\n<li>Josie Correa, executive director, Downtown Miami Partnership<\/li>\n<li>Francisco Garcia, director of planning, City of Miami<\/li>\n<li>Steve Goldman, real estate attorney, Greenberg Traurig<\/li>\n<li>William Hardin, director, FIU real estate programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese are some of the most knowledgeable real estate people in the area,\u201d said Hollander, who added that students on board were from her <em>Legal Environment of Real Estate<\/em> class, an undergraduate class and a graduate-level course \u201cThe group learned firsthand about boom and bust, realized why one development failed and another succeeded and heard how deals were made.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14750\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14750 size-full\" title=\"Suzanne Hollander and William Hardin\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Suzanne-Hollander-and-William-Hardin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suzanne Hollander and William Hardin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bibeau and Hollander along with FIU\u2019s Jerome Bain Real Estate Institute were the tour organizers.
