{"id":15215,"date":"2012-01-11T19:45:52","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T19:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=15215"},"modified":"2017-11-02T08:37:07","modified_gmt":"2017-11-02T12:37:07","slug":"fiu-business-brings-leading-international-strategic-management-conference-to-miami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/01\/fiu-business-brings-leading-international-strategic-management-conference-to-miami\/","title":{"rendered":"FIU Business brings leading international strategic management conference to Miami."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Global leaders in international strategy and research gathered in Miami for an important conference led by two Florida International University (FIU) College of Business Administration faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>The Strategic Management Society\u2019s (SMS) annual conference, held November 6-9, 2011, took on an international focus and a Miami flavor under the organizational leadership of Aya Chacar and Jose de la Torre, members of FIU\u2019s Department of Management and International Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to talk about the challenge of strategy in a multi-polar world,\u201d de la Torre said of the event, which drew over 1,000 participants, a near-record.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15217\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15217 size-full\" title=\"SMS Jose de la Torre\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/SMS_Jose-de-la-Torre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"364\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jose de la Torre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The conference also focused on the role of institutions and other factors that can make or break a company\u2019s strategy in the developing global marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time that FIU has had a center-stage presence in the field of strategy,\u201d Chacar said.<\/p>\n<p><em>International strategic management is center stage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Plenary sessions featured top experts in the fields of strategy research as well as leading executives from major international companies and the public sector from around the world. Among them were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jay Barney, professor, Ohio State University, SMS president<\/li>\n<li>Omar Ishrak, chairman and CEO, Medtronic<\/li>\n<li>Monica Luechtefeld, executive vice president, Office Depot<\/li>\n<li>Gilberto Neves, president and CEO, Odebrecht USA<\/li>\n<li>Jackson Nickerson, professor, Washington University in St. Louis; director, Brookings Institute\u2019s Executive Education<\/li>\n<li>Romano Prodi, former president, European Commission,\u00a0 former prime minister, Italy<\/li>\n<li>Jerry Rao, executive chairman, Value and Budget Housing Corporation, India<\/li>\n<li>Srilata Zaheer, interim dean, Carlson School of Management<\/li>\n<li>Enrique Zambrano, CEO, Proeza, S.A. de C.V., Mexico<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe were engaged and excited, and the organizers put together interesting plenary sessions on important topics, such as the internationalization of firms from emerging markets,\u201d said Ruth V. FIU faculty members Sumit Kundu and William Newburry helped Chacar facilitate one at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
