{"id":15674,"date":"2012-02-21T18:12:08","date_gmt":"2012-02-21T18:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=15674"},"modified":"2017-06-29T08:35:09","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T12:35:09","slug":"high-school-students-compete-in-fbla-pbls-the-great-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/02\/high-school-students-compete-in-fbla-pbls-the-great-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"High school students compete in FBLA-PBL\u2019s \u201cThe Great Debate.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National political debates are now frequent events but lively debates occur every minute in the international business world, at companies large and small.<\/p>\n<p>Because the art of convincing can be an important business skill, members of the Future Business Leaders of America\u2013Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) at Florida International University (FIU) made debating the focus of their free enterprise project, an annual outreach effort. \u201cThe Great Debate,\u201d conducted January 13, 2012 for students from Miami (Florida) Sunset Senior High School, gave participants the opportunity to test and improve their debating skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they arrived, students received their topics and relevant research to use,\u201d said Claudia Capdesuner, FBLA-PBL vice president of competition, who organized the event along with president Bruno Cevallos. \u201cThey were given time to prepare and then competed in pairs, in a single elimination competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15676\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15676 size-full\" title=\"Students presenting\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Students-presenting.jpg\" alt=\"Debaters present their case.\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Debaters present their case.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Social and political issues made for lively debating. Lais Negron and Gabee Quintana emerged victorious from the group of 24 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final topic was \u2018Should English be the national language?\u2019 and Lais and I had to argue against,\u201d Quintana said. \u201cWe were happy to win, and I know that participating helped my public speaking confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serving as judges were Yolanda Rodriguez (MBA \u201910, BS \u201907) assistant director, operations, Office of Advancement, Alumni and Corporate Relations, and three people from Toastmasters International: Michael Delgado (BBA \u201994); Anneli Hilpinen (MBA \u201910, BBA \u201906), manager, Ernst &amp; Young Student Learning Lab; and Tony Noissom.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the day\u2019s activities, FBLA-PBL members also conducted debating skills workshops for participants.<\/p>\n<p><em>Organization gets high schoolers on the business degree track.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>FBLA-PBL, one of the organizations in the College of Business Administration, is the college version of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a group for high school students. With Yanyn San Luis (BA \u201910) serving as advisor, FIU\u2019s chapter is the FBLA-PBL Florida Chapter of the Year and is ranked second strongest in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing there\u2019s a strong FBLA-PBL at FIU is one of the reasons I plan going there to earn a business degree,\u201d Quintana said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National political debates are now frequent events but lively debates occur every minute in the international business world, at companies large and small.
