{"id":15730,"date":"2012-02-27T14:13:17","date_gmt":"2012-02-27T14:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=15730"},"modified":"2017-11-03T12:01:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T16:01:22","slug":"miami-dade-county-officials-participate-in-intense-one-day-leadership-program-at-fiu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/02\/miami-dade-county-officials-participate-in-intense-one-day-leadership-program-at-fiu\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami-Dade County officials participate in intense one-day leadership program at FIU."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine a meeting of busy government officials where everyone arrived on time, came prepared, weren\u2019t checking their electronic devices constantly, participated enthusiastically, stayed for the entire all-day event&#8212;and best of all, left with substantial new knowledge about leadership.<\/p>\n<p>That describes the Leadership Development Program for Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez and his team, presented by Florida International University\u2019s (FIU) Center for Leadership (CFL) on January 31, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis highly-concentrated 10-hour program offered insight, motivation, research and new leadership models,\u201d said FIU&#8217;s president emeritus Modesto A. Maidique, who serves as the center\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15731\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15731 size-full\" title=\"Mayors Workshop Maidique\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mayors-Workshop-Maidique.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"388\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Modesto A. Maidique<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt FIU, we learned about ourselves as leaders plus acquired specific ways to understand, motivate and help our teams,\u201d Gimenez said. \u201cIt was definitely a worthwhile experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maidique and Gimenez, who had both been involved in a learning workshop earlier this year, had discussed developing a program for the mayor\u2019s team. FIU Business faculty member Nathan Hiller, Center for Leadership fellow who teaches courses on leadership, presented \u201cThe Canvas of Decision Making\u201d and Anne Freedman, CEO of Speakout, Inc., helped participants learn more about workplace motivators.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the mayor, participants were the county\u2019s five deputy mayors&#8212;Russell Benford, Alina Hudak, Chip Iglesias (EMBA \u201907), Ed Marquez (BBA \u201976) and Jack Osterholt&#8212;and administrators Fernando Figueredo (MBA \u201979), communications director; Alex Ferro, deputy chief of staff; Inson Kim, director of policy and legislative affairs; Lisa Martinez, senior advisor (MS \u201998, BA \u201993); and Jennifer Moon, budget director.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15732\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15732 size-full\" title=\"Anne Freedman\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mayors-Workshop-Freedman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Freedman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor has assembled a talented team of experienced, hard-working administrators who want the best for Miami-Dade County,\u201d Maidique said. \u201cTheir participation and enthusiasm were exceptional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Program presents growth opportunity for center.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Center for Leadership, known for successful development programs for business executives and for teachers, is about to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program for the Miami-Dade County marks the beginning of an additional direction: leadership programs for public officials,\u201d Maidique said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine a meeting of busy government officials where everyone arrived on time, came prepared, weren\u2019t checking their electronic devices constantly, participated enthusiastically, stayed for the entire all-day event&#8212;and best of all, left with substantial new knowledge about leadership.
