What advice would you give someone considering a PhD? What type of financial assistance do you receive? What courses do you take? What surprises have occurred?<\/p>\n<p>Those questions and others were answered by a lively group of panelists during \u201cThe Life of a PhD Student Information Workshop\u201d at the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU). The event was organized by Antoinette Smith, who teaches accounting and is the FIU leader of the PhD Pipeline Opportunity Program, a national initiative by Lucy J. Reuben of Duke University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15832\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15832 size-full\" title=\"Antoinette Smith\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Antoinette-Smith.jpg\" alt=\"Antoinette Smith\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antoinette Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI attended the program because I wanted to see how a PhD student lives day to day, and that\u2019s exactly what I learned,\u201d said Max Suarez (MBA \u201911), who is now investigating how to begin his PhD work.<\/p>\n<p>Smith welcomed the group of 27 students to the workshop. Reuben, who was visiting FIU, gave a PhD overview followed by a panel discussion by four FIU PhD students in the business school: Marcelo J. Alvarado-Vargas (MIB \u201904), Elizabeth Turner (BBA \u201994), Michelle Yang and Fang Zhao. A question and answer session wrapped up the workshop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15833\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15833 size-full\" title=\"Lucy J. Reuben\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lucy J. Reuben<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe enthusiasm and passion of the panelists and Dr. Smith was contagious,\u201d said Vivian Guzman, a student in the Professional MBA program. \u201cThe workshop was great and got me thinking more about getting a PhD in management and international business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Smith works to develop even more initiatives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Research has found that minorities do not apply to doctoral programs in great numbers; the PhD Pipeline Opportunity program works to change that. Smith, the first Faculty Associate of the Year for the nationwide effort, is bringing information and motivation to the high number of minorities at FIU.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15834\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15834 size-full\" title=\"Workshop Group\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Workshop-Group.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cThe Life of a PhD Student Information Workshop\u201d attracted an enthusiastic group.\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe Life of a PhD Student Information Workshop\u201d attracted an enthusiastic group.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe applaud Antoinette Smith, Executive Dean Joyce J.
