{"id":16031,"date":"2012-04-06T14:56:14","date_gmt":"2012-04-06T14:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=16031"},"modified":"2017-11-08T11:34:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T16:34:22","slug":"fiu-students-score-success-at-rotman-trading-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/04\/fiu-students-score-success-at-rotman-trading-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"FIU students score success at Rotman Trading Competition."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In its first showing at the prestigious Rotman Interactive Trading Competition, a team from Florida International University\u2019s (FIU) College of Business Administration won high praise, including a third-place finish in one of the trading contests.<\/p>\n<p>The invitation-only competition, held at the University of Toronto\u2019s Rotman School of Management, attracts some of the world\u2019s most astute student traders. Only 50 schools are invited to the annual event, which recently marked its ninth year. FIU was the only Florida school to receive an invitation.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Rotman trading simulation programs, teams participate in a series of trading competitions set forth in fixed scenarios. Each of the six contests is ranked individually, and then each team receives a total score.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16032\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16032\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16032 size-full\" title=\"Jamal Abdel Jabbar, Charles Stack, Shyrose Razwani, Daphne Gaetjens, Justin Garcia and Shaun Hoyes\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FIU-team-at-Rotman.jpg\" alt=\"Jamal Abdel Jabbar, Charles Stack, Shyrose Razwani, Daphne Gaetjens, Justin Garcia and Shaun Hoyes\" width=\"540\" height=\"361\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16032\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jamal Abdel Jabbar, Charles Stack, Shyrose Razwani, Daphne Gaetjens, Justin Garcia and Shaun Hoyes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>FIU\u2019s student traders &#8211;Daphne Gaetjens, Justin Garcia, Shaun Hoyes, Jamal Abdel Jabbar, Shyrose Razwani and Charles Stack&#8212;bested some veteran Rotman competitors and well-known names in business education, many of whom have been competing since the event began.<\/p>\n<p><em>Third place finish captures attention. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights for FIU was finishing third out of 50 teams in Quantitative Outcry, a contest that simulates a live floor trading scenario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat feeling was unbelievable,\u201d said Shaun Hoyes, associate director of the college\u2019s State Farm Financial Literacy Lab, who led the team. \u201cA lot of people there weren\u2019t familiar with our school. After that, they knew who we were and what FIU is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With real-life employers watching the participants and actively recruiting, Rotman provided an opportunity for FIU to make a statement in the world of business education.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16033\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16033 size-full\" title=\"Charlie Stack at Rotman\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Charlie-Stack-at-Rotman.jpg\" alt=\"Charles Stack on the trading floor of the Rotman Trading Competition\" width=\"364\" height=\"485\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Stack on the trading floor of the Rotman Trading Competition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis competition allowed FIU to face off against top echelon of business students,\u201d said Helen Simon, faculty advisor and the lab\u2019s director. \u201cIt was a great opportunity to gain exposure, not just for our students, but also for FIU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FIU team finished 36<sup>th<\/sup> out of 50 overall, a respectable outing for first-timers and ahead of a handful of top-level participants including Columbia University and the United States Military Academy (West Point).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a great showing,\u201d Simon said. \u201cIt demonstrates the quality of our students, and the strength of our program.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In its first showing at the prestigious Rotman Interactive Trading Competition, a team from Florida International University\u2019s (FIU) College of Business Administration won high praise, including a third-place finish in one of the trading contests.
