School of Accounting<\/em><\/p>\n

Manny Pravia (MST\u00a0 ’92), adjunct, presented \u201cAccounting for tax uncertainties from the tax, audit and legal perspectives\u201d at a joint American Association of Attorney-CPAs\/Tax Section of the Florida Bar. His article \u201cCPAs play vital role in IRS examinations<\/a>\u201d was published in the May\/June issue of Florida CPA Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems<\/em><\/p>\n

In May 2012, Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor and executive director of the Chapman Graduate School of Business\u2019 healthcare management programs, was presented the American College of Healthcare Executive\u2019s (ACHE) Exemplary Service Award. This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has been actively involved in ACHE providing significant leadership and contributions to furthering professional excellence at the chapter, regional and\/or national levels.<\/p>\n

An article titled \u201cThe Transformation of Nursing Education<\/a>\u201d by Jean Gordon, visiting faculty administrator, appeared in the May 2012 issue of South Florida Hospital News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fernando Martinez, adjunct, Healthcare MBA (HCMBA) and the Master of Science in Health Informatics and Management Systems (MSHIMS), which starts in the fall of 2012, was honored with the 2012 Technology Executive of the Year Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce on April 27th<\/sup>. He also serves on the MSHIMS Advisory Council.<\/p>\n

Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, was an invited faculty expert panel member for the Design Science Research in Information Systems (DESRIST) doctoral consortium in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 13, 2012.<\/p>\n

Department of Finance and Real Estate<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cCredit line availability and utilization in REITs,\u201d a paper co-authored by William Hardin, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, was selected by the American Real Estate Society (ARES) membership as the best paper published in Journal of Real Estate Research<\/em>—a premier journal—for the calendar year 2011. The organization\u2019s annual meeting took place April 17-21, 2012 at St. Pete Beach, Florida.<\/p>\n

Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, was quoted in the Sun Sentinel<\/em> in an article titled \u201cSouth Florida housing market has hit bottom, Zillow says<\/a>,\u201d on May 6, 2012, and twice in the Palm Beach Post<\/em>: on May 8, 2012, in an article titled \u201cBank offers 6-figure loan discounts<\/a>\u201d and on May 11th<\/sup> in \u201cHousing economist sees new urbanism as little more than a niche product<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Department of Management and International Business<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cCountry relatedness and international coherence,\u201d a paper by Aya Chacar, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, and Sokol Celo (PhD \u201911), has been nominated for the International Management Division\u2019s Fundacao Dom Cabral Best Paper in Strategy\/IB Theory Award. The award, given to one of four or five finalists, will be presented on August 6, 2012 at the Academy of Management annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The paper grew out of Celo\u2019s dissertation and will be published in the Academy of Management Proceedings 2012<\/em>, which includes the top 10 percent of papers in the field of management in 2012.<\/p>\n

Colombia FTA becoming a reality<\/a>, a column by Jerry Haar, professor, appeared in The Miami Herald <\/em>on May 7, 2012. On May 15, 2012, he was quoted in a Sun Sentinel<\/em> article titled U.S.-Colombia free trade pact starts, spurring business<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nathan Hiller, assistant professor, is faculty director of the Center for Leadership\u2019s High Potential Leadership program, which ran May 15-18, 2012. Eighteen director- and vice president-level participants from Ryder, Baptist Health, State Farm Insurance, US Southern Command, Baxter, FIU and several other for-profit and not-for profit organizations participated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first export of high technology SMEs: a comparative analysis of Costa Rican and Italian software exporters,\u201d a paper co-authored by Sumit Kundu, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, received the Thunderbird Award at the Business Association of Latin American Studies (BALAS) 2012 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 28-30, 2012. The Thunderbird Award recognizes an outstanding paper that demonstrates managerial or public policy applications and is awarded at each annual meeting.<\/p>\n

Modesto Maidique, professor and Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, along with the Center for Leadership, hosted Miami Leadership Summit II, a gathering of more than 85 of Miami\u2019s business, community, and civic leaders to address concerns facing Miami, on May 8, 2012. He also was the keynote speaker at the InterContinental Hotels Group VIP reception on May 10, 2012, speaking on the topic of \u201cThe six competencies of a leader.\u201d<\/p>\n
