{"id":17483,"date":"2012-07-26T13:08:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T13:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=17483"},"modified":"2017-11-02T08:46:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-02T12:46:22","slug":"students-turn-weekend-time-into-a-professional-bba-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/07\/students-turn-weekend-time-into-a-professional-bba-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"Students turn weekend time into a Professional BBA degree."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While it may have been Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup>, it was a lucky day for the 46 students participating in the recent College of Business graduation ceremonies for the 29<sup>th<\/sup> session of the Professional BBA (PBBA) Weekend program.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend program is designed to offer an accelerated part-time Bachelor of Business Administration degree option to students unable to attend traditional classes during the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us are working professionals, many with extended family responsibilities,\u201d said Gabriel Diaz (PBBA \u201912). \u201cThis program provides an excellent means to get a quality education in an efficient way that does not disrupt your weekday commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diaz, who was named valedictorian, is next headed to law school.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17484\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17484\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17484 size-full\" title=\"Diaz and Perry\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Diaz-and-Perry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabriel Diaz and Clifford Perry, then faculty director, PBBA programs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Libardo Angarita (PBBA \u201912), the PBBA program offers the best pathway to an advanced degree that he believes can lead to \u201cjob promotions, higher salaries and the possibility of creating your own business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>PBBA program forges strong group connections.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The weekend program is one of two <a href=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/undergraduate\/professional-bba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professional BBA programs<\/a> offered at Florida International University (FIU). The alternative PBBA Sunrise program provides an early-morning class option.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, the student groups enter at the same time and take all courses together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cit was an intense program, as I worked and studied for a double major,\u201d said Carolina Arenas (PBBA \u201912). \u201cI think all of us in the group really supported each other in and out of classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The students build tight bonds with their professors, too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year, the PBBA weekend group chose Chris Ellis, instructor, Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems, to receive the Circle of Excellence award for Best Professor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17485\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17485\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17485 size-full\" title=\"Perry and Ellis\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Perry-and-Ellis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"497\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clifford Perry and Chris Ellis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe engaged our class in a way that merged two types of learning&#8212;what comes from the classroom and books, and what you learn from doing while in the field,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cHe also showed that he genuinely cared about us learning what he was teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?group_id=&amp;user_id=23794481@N04&amp;set_id=72157630731957346\/show\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" align=\"middle\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While it may have been Friday the 13th, it was a lucky day for the 46 students participating in the recent College of Business graduation ceremonies for the 29th session of the Professional BBA (PBBA) Weekend program.
