{"id":17696,"date":"2012-08-23T18:00:55","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T18:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=17696"},"modified":"2017-11-09T12:14:13","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T17:14:13","slug":"business-students-get-up-close-look-at-rio-de-janeiro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2012\/08\/business-students-get-up-close-look-at-rio-de-janeiro\/","title":{"rendered":"Business students get up close look at Rio de Janeiro."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the rest of the world was watching the London Summer Olympics, Olivia Braidot and 12 other business students from Florida International University (FIU) were exploring Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the site of the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Soccer Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRio\u2019s beauty and culture were impressive and we packed a lot into two weeks,\u201d said Braidot, who participated in this two-week FIU study abroad program, July 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The program started with five days of classes at Fundacao Getulio Vargas (FGV), Brazil\u2019s number one business school.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17697\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17697 size-full\" title=\"Students with faculty member Ronaldo Parente\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Group-Shot.jpg\" alt=\"The students with faculty member Ronaldo Parente, seated, at the St. Teresa staircase\u2014or Selaron\u2019s Staircase\u2014which includes tiles from all over the world and which has been in process by Jorge Selaron for more than twenty years.\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The students with faculty member Ronaldo Parente, seated, at the St. Teresa staircase\u2014or Selaron\u2019s Staircase\u2014which includes tiles from all over the world and which has been in process by Jorge Selaron for more than twenty years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t a flip flop on campus,\u201d said Braidot about the formal atmosphere. \u201cThe impassioned professors shared information on finance, taxes, trade and other important topics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braidot plans to use her FIU degree to land a job with an international Miami-based company so she appreciated the global insight.<\/p>\n<p>The education of the students, accompanied by FIU Business faculty member Ronaldo Parente, continued with company visits. The group toured and met with key personnel at the Coppe Research Center, Globo TV studios, the City of Rio Operations Center and the Electric Nacional Operations Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe average traveler doesn\u2019t get this inside look at businesses and industries in another country,\u201d Braidot said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the reasons I chose to make this trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Group explores Rio. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The full agenda included exploring a rain forest, Brazilian music and cuisine and other opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Braidot lists the famous Christ statue and the cable car ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain among her favorite sight-seeing adventures. But even the sobering excursion to Santa Marta, a favela (shanty town) in Rio, was beneficial.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17700\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17700 size-full\" title=\"Group members at the Christ the Redeemer statue\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Christ-Statue.jpg\" alt=\"Group members at the Christ the Redeemer statue\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Group members at the Christ the Redeemer statue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe learned how some programs are helping the residents,\u201d Braidot said. \u201cBut I realized that in the United States, if you\u2019re poor, you can get a job and have food in the kitchen in a fairly short time.
