Trade-based money laundering is an increasingly sophisticated business with high-stakes implications. Spotting an irregular pattern in the shipment of goods across borders is an important tool in the battle against a plethora of financial crimes, from tax evasion to terrorist financing.<\/p>\n

Florida International University (FIU) College of Business faculty member John Zdanowicz, Department of Finance, has developed an international reputation for his research on detecting irregular patterns in global trade, which can often lead to the discovery of financial crimes. He recently addressed visitors from Kazakhstan and Kuwait visiting the United States at the invitation of the U. S. Department of State.<\/p>\n

The Miami Council for International Visitors arranged the two visits.<\/p>\n

Zdanowicz presented as part of the State Department\u2019s International Cooperation in Asset Forfeiture program to a group of four high-ranking economic, trade and law enforcement officials from Kazakhstan, who were invited to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program. He also presented on Combating Transnational Crime to three customs and ministry of justice leaders from Kuwait.<\/p>\n
