{"id":21627,"date":"2013-04-23T12:12:44","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T12:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=21627"},"modified":"2014-11-14T15:58:56","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T20:58:56","slug":"faculty-member-opens-students-eyes-to-opportunities-in-heath-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2013\/04\/faculty-member-opens-students-eyes-to-opportunities-in-heath-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty member opens students\u2019 eyes to opportunities in health IT."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Information about healthcare information turned out to greatly interest 79 students at Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>As a presenter in ITWomen\u2019s<em> <\/em>Role Model Speakers Program, Neera Bhansali, a faculty member in the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU) and executive director, biomedical informatics, FIU\u2019s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, helped the high school students, mostly from the ninth and 10<sup>th<\/sup> grades, see the role information plays across many opportunities in the healthcare field.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21628\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/ITWomen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21628\" title=\"ITWomen\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/ITWomen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/ITWomen.jpg 250w, https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/ITWomen-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neera Bhansali speaking to students at Piper High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI explained how information in the healthcare area contributes in a wide variety of arenas, from public health to emergency rooms,\u201d said Bhansali, who served as faculty director of the college\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/chapman\/mshims\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Master of Science in Health Informatics and Management Systems<\/a> (MSHI&amp;MS). \u201cThey were interested in a range of careers, from physical therapy to cardiology to insurance. I let them know that it\u2019s an open field, with room for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Examples bring the information to the young audience\u2019s level.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bhansali made sure to catch the high schoolers\u2019 attention by referencing social media and popular technologies, such as iPhones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students were interested to know about an app that can relay information from Nike running shoes to an iPhone or iPOD and help monitor health, as an example,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her hope to \u201cget the students to start thinking\u201d was more than fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>According to Arlene Willis, program coordinator, ITWomen\u2019s Role Model Speakers Program, \u201cThose children were not just listening, they began thinking ahead right before your very eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As evidence, Willis cited some of the students\u2019 comments and questions: \u201c[I] want to know more about how the chip is made&#8212;what goes into it . . .\u201d; \u201chow can IT help people avoid getting harmful diseases?\u201d; and \u201c[I am interested in] the future of gaming and virtual views in [the field of] medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program is one offered by ITWomen, part of whose mission is to increase the number of women who pursue careers in technology and engineering.
