The event was held May 23 at the North Shore Medical Center \u2013 FMC campus in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21943\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/john.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21943\" title=\"john\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/john.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/john.jpg 550w, https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/john-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to Right: Marisol Hernandez &#8217;12; Melissa Stedman, Cohort 8; Tamar Richards, Cohort 8; John Nykolaiszyn; Melissa Dunn &#8217;12; Dr. Nancy Borkowski, Executive Director HCMBA Program; Rene Zipper &#8217;11; Karina LaConcha &#8217;12; Yamile Castillo &#8217;12<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Florida International University (FIU) College of Business career expert John Nykolaiszyn (BA \u201996) served on a \u00a0three-member panel which gave the 50 attendees valuable tips on how to facilitate their own career advancement.<\/p>\n<p>Nykolaiszyn, associate director for employer development in the College of Business\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/careers\/index.cfm\">Career Management Services<\/a> office, shared industry research that identified successful career behavior for those who want to be promoted, such as \u201cdriving for results\u201d and \u201cdealing with ambiguity.\u201d He then used that research as a basis for a five-part strategy for advancement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first strategy is to gain an increased business focus,\u201d he said. \u201cLike people in other industries, healthcare professionals need to know the financial aspects of their organizations. Not having a grasp of the economics of your organization can be a roadblock to career advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nykolaiszyn described other parts of the strategy: honing interpersonal skills, driving change leadership, building a network and developing critical and creativity thinking skills.<\/p>\n<p><em>Group learns more about Healthcare MBA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the panel members shared advice with the audience about career moves, the value of the Healthcare MBA was discussed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe panel and the audience gave some excellent, real life examples of how this degree can significantly help a person advance,\u201d Nykolaiszyn said.<\/p>\n<p>FIU alumni and current students of <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/chapman\/hcmba\/index.cfm\">FIU\u2019s Healthcare MBA<\/a> program participated in the program, as did Nancy Borkowski, executive director of the college\u2019s HCMBA program and a board member of the Women&#8217;s Healthcare Executive Network.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gaining a firm knowledge of your employer\u2019s economic base is an essential step to career success for today\u2019s healthcare leaders.
