{"id":22324,"date":"2013-11-07T16:54:42","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T16:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=22324"},"modified":"2014-11-14T15:33:39","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T20:33:39","slug":"developer-malcolm-butters-shares-insight-with-real-estate-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2013\/11\/developer-malcolm-butters-shares-insight-with-real-estate-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Developer Malcolm Butters shares insight with real estate students."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Real estate development is a complex business \u2013 multiplied by 10 in an area as multi-faceted as southeast Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the Hollo School of Real Estate at Florida International University (FIU) got to learn more about the subject from a man not only deeply involved in the business but also an FIU alumnus.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Butters (MSRE \u201983), president and co-founder of Butters Construction &amp; Development, Inc., was the keynote speaker at \u00a0the most recent Developer Luncheons hosted by the Jerome Bain Real Estate Institute in the College of Business. The event, moderated by instructor Suzanne Hollander, was held October 24, 2013 at the Rusty Pelican in Miami.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22326\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22326\" style=\"width: 294px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/real-estate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22326\" title=\"real-estate\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/real-estate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/real-estate.jpg 294w, https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/real-estate-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Malcolm Butters (MSRE \u201983)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Butters, considered one of the most innovative builders in the area, spoke on a variety of subjects, including quality development. Public transportation was also a focal point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s too much traffic in Brickell and soon enough it\u2019s going to implode,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to start talking more about mass transit in South Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people mover works well for those who reside in Brickell but we need to start considering other options,\u201d added Adam Vaisman, Butters\u2019 director of acquisitions, also at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 90 students, alumni, faculty and real estate professionals attended the luncheon, which proved to be an excellent networking opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Butters told the audience that an economic driver to the South Florida community will be the expansion of PortMiami, already the second largest revenue producing department in Miami-Dade County.<\/p>\n<p><em>Importance of personal relationships was among the topics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the past 22 years, Butters Construction &amp; Development has built over 11 million square feet. But its president still sees a huge need for one-on-one communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry about some of the personal dynamics in real estate being lost,\u201d said Butters, a member of FIU\u2019s Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame. \u201cThe people who do well have a personal touch. It\u2019s very simple.
