Richard Bernstein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nHe told the group that they would buy many insurance policies in their lifetime, including health insurance, and those decisions can have a huge impact on their wealth. Saying that \u201chealth is the defining issue of the 21st<\/sup> century,\u201d Bernstein gave the example of his son who has two children that were hospitalized for prolonged periods<\/p>\n\u201cIf he didn\u2019t have health insurance, he would incur a $3 million debt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Bernstein, consistently ranked among the top insurance agents in the world, offered opinions on the Affordable Care Act, compliance issues for hospitals and other hot topics.<\/p>\n
Expert offers advice to FIU students.<\/em><\/p>\n\u201cHalf of young adults \u2013 Millenials \u2013 have rainy day funds,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re savvy, ambitious and they have goals.\u201d<\/p>\n
He recommended that students start saving as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if you can\u2019t afford to save now, set a goal,\u201d he said. \u201cWhere do you want to be in five, ten or 15 years? Set an achievable goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of studying insurance policies before making a decision. He pointed out the advantages of long-term care insurance, encouraging audience members to talk to their parents to see if they\u2019re covered.<\/p>\n
Bernstein also offered \u201cbigger picture\u201d advice to students.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I learned in college is to do a lot of listening,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t listen. They go in with a preconceived notion of what people want. But if you listen long enough, they\u2019ll tell you what they need and why they need it. That\u2019s really important.\u201d<\/p>\n
