{"id":22414,"date":"2013-12-12T15:30:53","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T15:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=22414"},"modified":"2018-01-24T07:10:48","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T12:10:48","slug":"orientation-program-rolled-out-for-all-accounting-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2013\/12\/orientation-program-rolled-out-for-all-accounting-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Orientation program rolled out for all Accounting students."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He may be getting ready to graduate from the School of Accounting at Florida International University (FIU), but Frank Metellus still remembers his orientation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a doubt, I wouldn\u2019t be where I am without getting such an excellent start,\u201d Metellus said. \u201cLearning about the profession and the requirements to succeed, starting with the curriculum and opportunities at FIU, was instrumental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reaction of Metellus and other students to a small-group orientation program sponsored by PWC convinced Director Ruth Ann McEwen to expand orientation, offering it to all new accounting students.<\/p>\n<p>The first all-school orientation was held November 15, 2013, ten days after students, entering their junior year, were accepted into the Accounting program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we presented was to strongly enhance the students\u2019 ability to graduate in four years,\u201d McEwen said. \u201cWe laid out the curriculum in a step-by-step manner so they would understand precisely what it takes to graduate on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?group_id=&amp;user_id=23794481@N04&amp;set_id=72157637806389005\/show\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" align=\"middle\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>McEwen also introduced the school\u2019s advisors, an important resource, she emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the executive boards of two student accounting organizations in the College of Business\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bapfiu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beta Alpha Psi<\/a>, the international accounting honor society, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpfafiu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALPFA FIU<\/a>, for accounting, finance and business-related majors\u2014presented information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students skillfully explained the overwhelming advantages of joining their organizations, including networking opportunities, and how a professional degree is not just about getting all A\u2019s,\u201d McEwen said.<\/p>\n<p><em>McEwen helps students look to the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>McEwen explained not only the details of achieving a bachelor\u2019s degree but also what to consider when taking the next step in the profession.
