{"id":22980,"date":"2014-04-11T15:14:59","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T15:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=22980"},"modified":"2016-05-19T16:15:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-19T20:15:52","slug":"academy-of-finance-students-receive-ipads-for-winning-essays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2014\/04\/academy-of-finance-students-receive-ipads-for-winning-essays\/","title":{"rendered":"Academy of Finance students receive iPads for winning essays."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22985\" title=\"ipad\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ipad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ipad.jpg 550w, https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ipad-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Winning essays netted four high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools a new iPad mini, presented to them at a reception at the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU) on March 11, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The students were among nearly 600 participants from the Academy of Finance program, part of the National Academy Foundation, who spent a day late last year visiting the college in a program presented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/sffll\/\" target=\"_blank\">State Farm Financial Literacy Lab<\/a>. Students were asked to write an essay describing their impressions of the business school and campus life during the \u201cI am C<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 College and Career Ready\u201d events, and four students\u2019 essays were selected as the best.<\/p>\n<p>FIU Business Dean David R. Klock presented the iPads to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Giancarlo Dominguez, Hialeah Gardens High School<\/li>\n<li>Rachel Holtzman, Coral Reef Senior High School<\/li>\n<li>Yulissa Reyes, Booker T. Washington Senior High School (represented by her mother, Maria Elena Jimenez)<\/li>\n<li>Kriss Reyes, Booker T. Washington Senior High School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud of these students. We at FIU Business have been honored to welcome the students from the Academy of Finance and give them a taste of what life in our college is all about,\u201d Klock said. \u201cWe want to help them take the first step toward great careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students attended the reception with their parents as well as the lead teachers from their schools.<\/p>\n<p>Millie Fornell, chief of staff for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, praised the students\u2019 work. She told the group that her daughter earned bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in Accounting from FIU\u2019s College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot say enough about the quality of education she received,\u201d Fornell said.<\/p>\n<p>Also congratulating the students were, from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Dr. Lupe Ferran Diaz, executive director in the Department of Career and Technical Education, and Robert Quinn, educational specialist; also, event organizers from FIU\u2019s State Farm Financial Literacy Lab: Flavio Carrillo, faculty director, and Katherine Grau, lab manager.<\/p>\n<p><em>Students show promise, receive encouragement.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Grau noted the high quality of the students\u2019 writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should be very proud of your work,\u201d she told the winners.<\/p>\n<p>The stories of perseverance that the speakers shared with the students had an impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat impressed me the most was the message to never give up and to follow your dreams,\u201d said Holtzman.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" align=\"middle\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?group_id=&amp;user_id=23794481@N04&amp;set_id=72157642294810154\/show\" width=\"100%\" ><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winning essays netted four high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools a new iPad mini, presented to them at a reception at the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU) on March 11, 2014.
