Not <strong>Christy Martinez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always wanted to work for the Marlins,\u201d said this international business and marketing major and lifelong Marlins\u2019 fan.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 625px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2910-1\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/7\/christy-martinez.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/7\/christy-martinez.mp4\">https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/7\/christy-martinez.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>She recently took another step toward realizing that goal when she became the team\u2019s publications sales intern, a position she began on Opening Day and that will last till the end of the Marlins\u2019 season, which she hopes will take her through the World Series.<\/p>\n<p>In a course titled <em>Marketing Yourself<\/em> <em>Marketing Yourself<\/em> <em>in Today&#8217;s Competitive Job Market<\/em> offered in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), Martinez interviewed the team\u2019s manager of Hispanic sales and marketing. That led to a position with the Marlins\u2019 Street Team, a group of 20 to 30 members who promote the team at events throughout South Florida. Now, she\u2019s in charge of scheduling the group. She\u2019s also in charge of sales and inventory for the familiar items at the ballpark: programs, media guides, yearbooks, and scorecards.<\/p>\n<p><em>Experience nets course credit for Martinez.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs one of the business school\u2019s strategic goals for 2008-2009, we committed to promoting real world experiences as part of the academic training of our graduates,\u201d said <strong>K. Galen Kroeck<\/strong>, chair of Department of Management and International Business, which coordinates the <a href=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/academic-departments\/management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undergraduate internships<\/a>. \u201cWe expanded the internship program to help us accomplish that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Kroeck, \u201cStudents find the opportunity and we evaluate it to make sure it\u2019s equivalent to a course before approving it. We also make sure the employers understand that they serve as instructors with responsibilities to develop the interns through appropriately challenging assignments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez, who is bilingual and whose FIU education \u201cgave me the tools and prepared me to work in a real environment,\u201d hopes her good fortune thus far, combined with her background and experience this season will turn into a full-time job with the franchise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ask most young kids what they want to do when they grow up and you\u2019ll likely hear options such as astronaut, doctor, lawyer or teacher.
