From exploring a virtual Cuba world to examining the impact of language in advertising to bilingual Hispanics, members of the faculty of the College of Business Administration tackle research projects that help Florida International University (FIU) fulfill its mission as a public research institution. And, as part of its mission, the university\u2019s Center for International Business Education and Research<\/a> (FIU-CIBER) creates and supports projects that align with a set of Congressional mandates, including those that are interdisciplinary.<\/p>\n Recently, FIU-CIBER Director Mary Ann Von Glinow<\/strong> and Christos Koulamas<\/strong>, associate dean of the business school awarded grants\u2014up to $3,000\u2014to 11 members of the business school faculty and to Maida Watson<\/strong>, Department of Modern Languages, who teaches courses on language for business. The grant recipients will be known as CIBER research associates.<\/p>\n \u201cIn evaluating the academic quality of the proposals, I was surprised at the creativity and depth that our faculty engages in when it comes to international research,\u201d Von Glinow said. \u201cEach awardee\u2019s research fits into what we call \u2018mandatory activities\u2019 authorized by Congress under our Title VI grant (CIBER). Needless to say, I am thrilled to be able to support such important research.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n The recipients and the titles of the funded proposals by department are:<\/p>\n Management and International Business <\/em>Aya Chacar<\/strong>, \u201cBusiness Groups and Performance\u201d; William Newburry<\/strong>, \u201cForeignness and Corporate Citizenship Perceptions in Latin America and Spain\u201d and jointly, \u201cPolitical Risk Performance Persistence\u201d<\/p>\n <\/a>Marketing<\/em><\/p>\n Cecilia Alvarez<\/strong> and Kimberly Taylor<\/strong>, \u201cLanguage Effects in Negotiations\u201d; Alvarez and Paul<\/strong> W. Miniard<\/strong>, \u201cLanguage Effects in Advertising to Hispanic Bilinguals\u201d; Walfried M. Lassar<\/strong>, \u201cAn Examination of Gray Markets: The Impact of the Internet on International Gray Market Activity\u201d and Tiger Li<\/strong>, \u201cFrom Sourcing Investor to Market Investor: The Impact of Emerging Customer Strategy on Competitiveness of American Firms in China\u201d<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n Finance and Real Estate<\/em><\/p>\n John Zdanowicz<\/strong>, “Detecting Terrorist Financing and Money Laundering: Open Source Intelligence and Data Mining the U.S. Trade Data Base\u201d; and Krishnan Dandapani<\/strong>, \u201cProtecting Financial Architecture: Mitigating Against Cyber Terrorism\u201d<\/p>\n
