It all took place when they attended the Minority Summer Residency Program (MSRP) July 13-16, 2009, offered by the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA) and facilitated by the School of Accounting at Florida International University (FIU).<\/p>\n<p>And why not?<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 625px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-3195-1\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/8\/msrp_final.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/8\/msrp_final.mp4\">https:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/biznews\/2009\/8\/msrp_final.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>The School of Accounting in the College of Business Administration at FIU has an active accounting association (FIU-AA) chapter with students happy to volunteer. Faculty members&#8212;including the school\u2019s director and a FICPA vice president, <strong>Sharon Lassar<\/strong>, and <strong>Tessie Brunken<\/strong> (EMST \u201986, BBA \u201981), assistant director of student services&#8212;presented. An advisory board member and a vice president for Royal Caribbean, <strong>Thomas A. Burke <\/strong>(MACC \u201993), arranged a tour of The Majesty of the Seas and presentations on private accounting. Ernst &amp; Young, which works closely with the school to develop national opportunities for FIU accounting graduates, hosted a tour of their local offices and exposed students to public accounting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3197\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3197 size-medium\" title=\"Sharon Lassar welcomed the group and made a presentation.\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/tn_2009-07-Minority-Summer-Residency-Program-05-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sharon Lassar welcomed the group and made a presentation.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sharon Lassar welcomed the group and made a presentation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe want the brightest students to come into the career and to recognize what FIU has to offer, including the many benefits we provide to a diverse student body,\u201d Brunken said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Students&#8212;high school and college&#8212;show maturity and dedication.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great program,\u201d said <strong>George Ramos<\/strong> (BACC \u201909), a former FIU-AA officer who lined up volunteers as chaperones in the dorms, and who presented on the benefits of joining an accounting association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was awesome to help the students see more about the accounting profession and what it\u2019s like to be at a university,\u201d said FIU-AA member <strong>Carolina Urdaneta<\/strong>. \u201cThe students were very mature.
