{"id":3497,"date":"2009-09-04T16:15:22","date_gmt":"2009-09-04T20:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=3497"},"modified":"2017-11-09T08:18:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T13:18:21","slug":"junior-accounting-major-wins-national-student-of-the-year-award-from-alpfa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2009\/09\/junior-accounting-major-wins-national-student-of-the-year-award-from-alpfa\/","title":{"rendered":"Junior accounting major wins \u201cNational Student of the Year\u201d award from ALPFA."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the third time, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alpfa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA)<\/a> has named a Florida International University (FIU) student \u201cNational Student of the Year.\u201d <strong>Daniel Zamora<\/strong>, a junior majoring in accounting, joins <strong>Krystel Ramos<\/strong> (MACC \u201908, BACC \u201907) and <strong>Zameer Upadhya<\/strong> (BACC \u201902) as the winner of the highest student award given by ALPFA.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3498\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3498 size-full\" title=\"Daniel Zamora\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/tn_NW-Daniel-Zamora.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Zamora and Manny Espinoza, ALPFA CEO, during the convention at which Zamora was named ALPFA National Student of the Year\" width=\"433\" height=\"550\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Zamora and Manny Espinoza, ALPFA CEO, during the convention at which Zamora was named ALPFA National Student of the Year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the seventh consecutive year&#8212;each year the awards have existed&#8212;ALPFA recognized FIU in two other categories: Zamora as \u201cSouth Region Student of the Year\u201d and the Florida International University Accounting Association (FIU-AA)-ALPFA as \u201cSouth Region Student Chapter of the Year.\u201d The student chapter in the College of Business Administration is the largest in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very honored to have received the award on behalf of FIU, which has helped me develop as a person,\u201d said Zamora, who has already served as the student organization\u2019s president. \u201cIt\u2019s not an award for me; it\u2019s for everyone who helped me&#8212;our executive board, the student members and the School of Accounting&#8212;without whom I would never have achieved any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Hard work and leadership skills position ALPFA members for ongoing success.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The awards recognize Zamora and the chapter for having reached an all-time high of 143 members and implementing new events such as Excel workshops and a Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA) panel discussion, to name just two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs founder and former president of the chapter I\u2019m proud to see the tradition of excellent leadership continue,\u201d Upadhya said. \u201cMentoring the last two winners has been even more gratifying than winning the award myself.
