{"id":3676,"date":"2007-12-01T10:54:46","date_gmt":"2007-12-01T14:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=3676"},"modified":"2014-11-14T16:01:53","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T21:01:53","slug":"department-of-states-energy-advisor-meets-with-colleges-energy-business-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2007\/12\/department-of-states-energy-advisor-meets-with-colleges-energy-business-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of State\u2019s energy advisor meets with college\u2019s Energy Business Forum."},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"360\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/newsletters\/BusinessNetworks\/2007\/12\/images\/energy.jpg\" alt=\"Women on the Move\" width=\"350\" height=\"229\" \/><br \/>\n<em><strong>Ed Glab<\/strong>, director, Knight Ridder Center for  Excellence in Management; <strong>Carmen Algeciras<\/strong> (MIB \u201903, BA \u201901), director, USAID Farmer-to-Farmer Program; <strong>Greg Manuel<\/strong>, Department of State energy advisor, and <strong>George  Philippidis<\/strong>, associate director of the university\u2019s Applied Research  Center.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>On  December 4, 2007<strong>, Greg Manuel<\/strong>, Department of State energy advisor to Condoleezza Rice, met with members of the college\u2019s Energy Business Forum (EBF)\u2014part of its Knight Ridder Center for Excellence in Management\u2014to learn more about the Forum\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked to meet with us because of our growing recognition for work in the areas of biofuels and energy security in the Americas,\u201d said <strong>Carmen Algeciras,<\/strong> director, John Ogonowski Farmer-to-Farmer (FTF) program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is part of the Knight Ridder Center.<\/p>\n<p>She said Manuel is in Miami because of the Caribbean Central American Action Conference this week (during which the Knight Ridder Center will present a panel discussion) and requested to meet with the college\u2019s Energy Business Forum\u2019s staff to learn more about its activities.\u00a0 The Forum has received considerable international recognition for its work in this area, thanks, in part, to its events with General Motors, Exxon Mobil, and other organizations focusing on energy security and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have established relationships with other members of the Department of State and have been collaborating with them on a number of activities, including trips by Dr. George Philippidis, co-director of the EBF, to educate governments in the region about biofuels.\u201d\u00a0 Philippidis has made trips to El Salvador, Honduras, and St. Kitts to promote biofuels.<\/p>\n<p>The visit included a meeting with EBF personnel and the Applied Research Center staff, focusing specifically on energy security through the pursuit of alternative transportation fuels, including the latest in ethanol research, hydrogen research, and biomass gasification systems.\u00a0 It also dealt with some of the Forum\u2019s future activities, including its international Energy Business Forum on \u201cBiofuels in the Americas,\u201d scheduled for January 24, 2008.
