Only this time, the person putting on the caps was <strong>Joyce Elam<\/strong>, executive dean of the college. And, the setting was the first Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle board meeting&#8212;not of the school year, but of the fiscal year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4604\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4604 size-medium\" title=\"At the Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle board meeting, Executive Dean Joyce Elam detailed the decision-making model devised by Edward De Bono in his book Six Thinking Hats.\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/hats-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"At the Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle board meeting, Executive Dean Joyce Elam detailed the decision-making model devised by Edward De Bono in his book Six Thinking Hats.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle board meeting, Executive Dean Joyce Elam detailed the decision-making model devised by Edward De Bono in his book Six Thinking Hats.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur Circle members are already leaders and are growing every day,\u201d said <strong>Monique Catoggio<\/strong> (EMBA \u201903), director of advancement and alumni relations. \u201cThey enjoy and appreciate being part of the kind of leadership development we can provide as well as hearing Dean Elam\u2019s semi-annual updates on the college\u2019s strategy, new programs and initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the board meeting on September 16, 2009, the group broke into committees&#8212;community service, action and service learning, mentoring and development&#8212;and identified their six- and twelve-month goals.<\/p>\n<p>But before they got down to business, Elam gave a one-hour professional development seminar detailing the decision-making model devised by Edward de Bono in his book <em>Six Thinking Hats<\/em>, and gave each attendee a copy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Forums respond to input from members.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Catoggio, the idea to have Leadership Forums&#8212;four this fiscal year&#8212;grew out of a survey on which Circle members indicated that continuing to receive educational experiences, in smaller groups and with leaders from the college, was an important advantage of staying involved as alumni.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to do leadership development as a thank you to them for all they do for us,\u201d Catoggio said.<\/p>\n<p>At a gathering this year in August, the group was treated to time with FIU president <strong>Mark Rosenberg<\/strong>, who had just begun his tenure in that post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle recently got a reminder of the school-room instruction to put on their thinking caps.
