On November 15, 2007, concerned students, faculty, and staff joined representatives from the health care community in the Ocean Bank Auditorium in the new College of Business Administration Complex to hear experts shed light on dissimilarities in health care coverage and availability in the United States.<\/p>\n
The panel discussion provided the cornerstone event for the first Florida International University \u201cAetna Day,\u201d hosted by the college and sponsored by Aetna, one of the nation\u2019s leading diversified health care benefits companies.<\/p>\n
\u201cAddressing racial and ethnic disparities is one of the most important challenges facing tomorrow\u2019s health care leaders,\u201d said Aetna\u2019s\u00a0Orlando Mendoza<\/strong>, vice president of strategic market development for Miami. \u201cAetna hopes to engage the university\u2019s students in helping us meet that challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n The panel included\u00a0Valerie Beckles<\/strong>, Aetna South Florida medical director;\u00a0Julie Zaharatos<\/strong>, health analyst, Health Council of South Florida; and\u00a0Thinh H. Tran<\/strong>, corporate vice president and chief quality and patient safety officer, Baptist Health, South Florida.\u00a0James Patrick O\u2019Leary<\/strong>, executive associate dean of clinical affairs in the university\u2019s College of Medicine, served as panel moderator.<\/p>\n \u201cO\u2019Leary provided the glue that kept the discussion focused, relevant, and cohesive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Event provides students with opportunity to learn more about Aetna.<\/em><\/p>\n Following the morning\u2019s continental breakfast and panel, representatives from Aetna remained on campus, holding student information and recruiting sessions throughout the afternoon.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are delighted that Aetna spent the day on our campus and brought us this quality program on a topic important to people of all ages in our country\u2014health care availability,\u201d said\u00a0Joyce J.
