Under the organization\u2019s new executive board and its president, <strong>Dan Berkovitz<\/strong>, the group recently held its first 2009-10 school year event, titled \u201cInvesting in Commercial Real Estate,\u201d and it was a \u201cbig success\u201d according to RESA\u2019s faculty advisor, <strong>William Hardin<\/strong>, director of real estate programs in the College of Business Administration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5728\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5728 size-medium\" title=\"Dan-Berkovitz\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Dan-Berkovitz1-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Berkovitz\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Berkovitz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An audience of 80+ heard Jose Fernandez (BA \u201977) and Jeff Cohen provide insights on the \u201cSouth Beach area revitalization and how other areas in Miami may be set for such a transformation,\u201d Hardin said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5727\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5727 size-medium\" title=\"Jose Fernandez\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/tn_jose-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Jose Fernandez\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jose Fernandez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFernandez has been investing in multi-family units for the past 30 years,\u201d said Berkovitz, a management major and the only non-real estate major on RESA\u2019s executive board. He connected to Fernandez, who had visited his blog, and Fernandez led him to Cohen, \u201cwho has been investing in resort hotels, industrial properties and multi-family units for the past 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5729\" style=\"width: 174px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/tn_jeff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5729\" title=\"tn_jeff\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/tn_jeff-174x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jeff Cohen\" width=\"174\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Cohen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The speakers gave the students practical advice about the effort required to evaluate transactions before finding one that\u2019s worthwhile, given that \u201cthere are literally thousands of commercial properties for sale in South Florida at any time,\u201d Hardin said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Event shows students path to professional contacts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From Berkovitz\u2019s perspective, \u201cThey were ideal speakers to renew enthusiasm for RESA,\u201d noting that RESA\u2019s next event scheduled for December 3, 2009 will tie into Art Basel with a tour of Miami\u2019s Wynwood Art District to view commercial property.<\/p>\n<p>And from his perspective as advisor to a student organization, Hardin appreciated what Fernandez and Cohen had to say about mentoring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students realized that there are many in the real estate industry willing to mentor students,\u201d he said. \u201cWhile the business is very competitive, it is one where contacts are important and understanding participants\u2019 ethics and ability is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether or not the local real estate market has rebounded, the Real Estate Student Association (RESA) at Florida International University (FIU) definitely has.
