{"id":6687,"date":"2010-02-18T14:55:03","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T18:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/?p=6687"},"modified":"2010-02-18T14:55:03","modified_gmt":"2010-02-18T18:55:03","slug":"alumni-circles-mentoring-program-reaches-out-to-energize-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/2010\/02\/alumni-circles-mentoring-program-reaches-out-to-energize-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Circle\u2019s mentoring program reaches out to energize students."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under the guidance of the <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/alumni\/alumni_circle.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle<\/a>, the recent re-launch of the College of Business Administration\u2019s mentoring program aligns with Florida International University (FIU) President Rosenberg\u2019s call to action to energize tomorrow\u2019s business leaders today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to discover potential, nurture talent and help turn lives around, while shaping the future of our school and community,\u201d said <strong>Luisa Mendoza-Chavez<\/strong> (BS \u201905), who co-chairs the Alumni Circle mentoring program committee with <strong>Gloria Romero Roses<\/strong> (BBA \u201992).<\/p>\n<p>The mentoring program kicked off with a January 29, 2010 orientation session that brought together 14 students with 14 mentors from the college\u2019s alumni and the local business community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6727\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fiubusiness.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6727\" title=\"fiubusiness\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/fiubusiness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mentors and mentees in the Dean\u2019s Alumni Circle mentoring program mark the beginning of their new relationships.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mentors and mentees stay in touch via monthly meetings or phone calls. They work together to meet the goals outlined in their mentoring action plan.<\/p>\n<p>The mentors focus on helping enhance their mentee\u2019s learning experience by providing exposure to industry-specific, real-world business experience. They also offer much-needed support to students who may be at risk of dropping out or extending their degree programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/graphic2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6751\" title=\"graphic2\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/graphic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe Alumni Circle mentoring committee offers extraordinary support and creativity,\u201d Mendoza-Chavez said. \u201cEach member brings many valuable resources to the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Setting the \u201cpay it forward\u201d principle into motion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza-Chavez describes her own mentor as \u201can angel dressed in a business suit\u201d who opened the door of opportunity and led her to find a successful career path. Her experience ignited her belief in the power of mentoring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the unique value proposition of the Alumni Circle: providing a platform for alums to channel their passion for the benefit of our students and ultimately our community at large,\u201d Romero Roses said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of mentoring is that each relationship is unique,\u201d Mendoza-Chavez said. \u201cWe aim to transform the students, motivating and inspiring them to accomplish personal and career goals.
