Students from Florida International University\u2019s (FIU) <a href=\"http:\/\/business.fiu.edu\/chapman\/mba_executive.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Executive MBA<\/a> (EMBA) program recently put that question directly to some of the world\u2019s leading CEOs.<\/p>\n<p>Along with their peers from Nova Southeastern University and the University of Miami, the EMBA students were guests at a luncheon sponsored by The Business Council, an association of Fortune 500 executives. Also on hand was College of Business Administration management professor <strong>Jerry Haar<\/strong>, an expert on entrepreneurship, innovation and corporate strategy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6888\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/emba.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6888\" title=\"emba\" src=\"https:\/\/biznews.fiu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/emba.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EMBA students Rasheme Richardson, Arica Finneston, Rodolfo Bezerra, Jorge Abreu and Luis Pardo attended The Business Council luncheon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event gave the attendees a rare opportunity to chat one-on-one with the heads of such powerhouse corporations as Dow Chemical, Monsanto and Archer Daniels Midland. The executives shared information about their own careers and answered students\u2019 questions on pressing issues in today\u2019s business world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CEOs enjoyed interacting with new, upcoming minds,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebusinesscouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Business Council<\/a> Executive Director Phil Cassidy said.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Conversations yield new insights for business students.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jorge Abreu <\/strong>described the<strong> <\/strong>discussions as \u201ceye-opening.\u201d As the owner of a small nursery in West Kendall, he was surprised to learn that he and the corporate CEOs grapple with some of the same issues, such as \u201cproperty values, regulation and community involvement.\u201d Through his conversations with CEOs like Dow\u2019s Andrew Liveris, Abreu gained a new perspective on what life is like at the helm of a huge global concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really stressed the importance of staying connected to employees and suppliers at all levels so that those people feel valued and appreciated for their contributions,\u201d Abreu said. \u201cI just assumed you lost touch with the human side of the business once you got to that level, so it was helpful to hear that\u2019s not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his mind, the benefits of attending such an event are inestimable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow often do I get to sit down with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company?\u201d he said. \u201cI would tell other students that if they get the chance, go.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does it take to succeed in the often-turbulent world of business?
