Department of Management and International Business

Several faculty members, along with a recent PhD graduate and a current doctoral student, won awards at the Academy of International Business (AIB) 2009 Annual Meeting held in San Diego, California, from June 27-30, 2009.

One came from the Institute of International Business (IIB), which is associated with the Stockholm School of Economics, and Women in the Academy of International Business (WAIB). The “IIB/WAIB Award for Increased Gender Awareness in International Business Research” was won by a paper titled “Institutional Factors Affecting Women’s Participation in Business Leadership around the Globe.” FIU co-authors were Amanda M. Bullough (PhD ’08), K. Galen Kroeck, William Newburry and Sumit Kundu.

“Psychological Work Preferences: Does Gender Matter?,” co-authored by Ron Gilbert, Meredith Burnett and Jerry Haar, was a runner-up.

“Institutional Factors Affecting Women’s Participation in Business Leadership around the Globe” was also first runner-up for an award from the International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship (IJGE) and WAIB: the “IJGE/ WAIB 1st Annual Emerging Scholar Award in Women’s Entrepreneurship.”

Two additional awards went to members of the college: the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) “Best Reviewer Award” went to Newburry, one of 10 given for journal reviews over the past year, and the “Conference Best Reviewer Award” was given to doctoral candidate Abrahim Soleimani. He was one of 23 recipients chosen out of 1,084 reviewers for the conference.

Department of Finance and Real Estate

John Zdanowicz recently delivered two webinars for international audiences through the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS). On July 15, 2009, he presented a European webinar titled Mitigating the Risks of International Trade Transactions through Effective Monitoring,” and on July 23, 2009, he presented an Asia-Pacific webinar titled “Monitoring International Trade-Based Activities to Detect Illegal Activities.”

School of Accounting

Krishnamurthy Surysekar has been invited to join the editorial board of the Journal of Management Accounting Research (JMAR)—a premier journal—for the period 2010-2012.
