Two business school faculty members honored at 2009 Faculty Convocation.

Donald Roomes, Department of Management and International Business, and Laureano Martinez, Department of Finance and Real Estate, were among a very select group recognized at the annual Faculty Convocation, held on September 17, 2009.

Roomes was the sole recipient of an award for advising. Martinez was one of three adjunct faculty members to receive an award for excellence in teaching.

“Being recognized with the faculty award for excellence in advising is truly a special feeling,” said Roomes, who for 15 years directed the College of Business Administration’s  BBA+ programs and recently moved into teaching full time. “I feel such a sense of being humbled by the tremendous desire and responsibility within, to live up to this honor.”

Martinez, a leader in the banking industry for more than three decades, including as vice president and senior private banker at Citigroup Private Bank, and an adjunct professor in the business school for the past seven years, also was delighted.

“Teaching is for me is a second career and something that I do out of conviction and a sense of public service,” he said. “The recognition by my peers gives me a wonderful feeling; it validates my efforts and motivates me even more to excel in my chosen profession.”

Mark B. Rosenberg affirms importance of faculty contributions.

FIU’s new president, Mark B. Rosenberg, gave the keynote speech, focused on the “life of the mind.”

“The life of the mind matters,” he said. “In these times as we rise to meet the challenges of the 21st century we must not take our special role for granted as guardians of the life of the mind.”

The event took place at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center.
