Cuban-American CPAs Association gala celebrates leaders: past, current and future.

When 250 people gathered at this year’s Cuban-American CPAs Association (CACPA) gala, it was like a Florida International University (FIU) reunion bringing, together current leaders with an eye toward future ones.

“I appreciate that the CACPA takes the time to honor community leaders,” said Sharon Lassar, director, School of Accounting, in FIU’s College of Business Administration. “It shows the accounting profession’s commitment to the community as a whole. This year, it was particularly nice because of those honored.”

Those honorees, both from FIU, were Modesto A. Maidique, former president of the university and now executive director of the Center for Leadership in the business school, and Pedro Jose Greer Jr., assistant dean of academic affairs, College of Medicine, whom President Obama honored earlier this year with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Alumni, many of whom have become leaders in the accounting profession in South Florida, also played a major role during the evening. Among them, Ed Duarte (BACC ’98), manager, BDO Seidman, LLP, co-chair of the School of Accounting Alumni Affinity Council (SOAAAC), was installed as the new CACPA president, and Alfredo Cepero (MACC ’90, BACC ’88) audit partner, BDO Seidman, LLP emceed.

Funds raised will aid future leaders.

The CACPA hosts other fundraisers during the year, with the money going to college scholarships for accounting students in need. This year, the gala raised $10,000.

“In January, we will distribute scholarships at four area colleges and universities,” Duarte said, noting that four accounting students at FIU were among last year’s recipients, each receiving $1,250.

“The generosity of the CACPA helps secure the future of the accounting profession, and the organization’s members serve as role models to the students,” Lassar said. “Their actions show the importance of community involvement and dedication to a common cause. We appreciate their support for truly deserving students.”

The gala took place on October 23, 2009 at the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables.
