Kenneth Henry (PhD ’08, MACC ’94), clinical associate professor, was quoted twice in a report published by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Launched in June 2010 at the London School of Economics, the report, titled Risk and Reward: Tempering the Pursuit of Profit, looks at how the financial system went wrong prior to the financial crisis, identifying a massive failure of “people risk.”

Jerry Haar, associate dean for international programs and professor and research fellow has joined the Miami Finance Forum’s Advisory Board. The Miami Finance Forum is a not-for-profit membership organization comprising professionals and executives from the finance, investment management, banking, capital markets, private equity, legal, accounting and related fields in South Florida.
William Newburry, associate professor and Knight Ridder Research Professor, and doctoral student Abrahim Soleimani won the “Second Best Paper” award at the 2010 Reputation Institute Annual Conference in Rio de Janeiro in May. The paper, co-authored with two colleagues and titled “Firm- and Country-level Determinants of Individual Corporate Reputation Assessments,” was one of a number of projects funded with a research award from the Center for International Business Education and Research (FIU-CIBER) in 2009.
Juan I. Sanchez, professor and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Chair in Management, has been asked by the National Academies of Science to serve in their committee charged with identifying assessment procedures for 21st-century skills. This process should influence workforce readiness programs and, more broadly, education reform in the near future. This is the third time he has served on a NAS committee in the past eight years, a very high academic achievement.

“Effect of Regulation FD on Information Disclosures by Firms,” a paper co-authored by Edward Lawrence, assistant professor, Arun Prakash, Knight Ridder Center Research Professor, and two colleagues, received the “Best Paper” award at the International Conference on Finance at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, India, in late 2009.
Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems
In May 2010, Nancy Borkowski, director of the Chapman Graduate School of Business’ healthcare management programs, was presented the William G. Follmer Bronze Award from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). The prestigious award—named after William G. Follmer, who is credited with the creation of the American Association of Hospital Accountants (AAHA, now HFMA)—recognizes an individual who has been actively involved in HFMA providing significant service at the chapter, regional and/or national level.
