Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor and director of health management programs, appeared as a panelist on WPBT2’s Issues. The roundtable public affairs program focused on the future of Jackson Health System.

Kaushik Dutta, associate professor and Debra VanderMeer, assistant professor, have had their article “SOA Performance Enhancement through XML Fragment Caching” accepted for publication by Information Systems Research, a journal in the UT-Dallas list.

Department of Finance and Real Estate

Brice Dupoyet, associate professor, has been appointed to the Florida International Bankers’ Association (FIBA) Professorship for three years. As a FIBA professor, he will continue to conduct research and teach courses in the field and serve actively in the academic community. He also will be the college’s liaison to FIBA and will both attend and participate in that organization’s professional and social functions.

Research by Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, was featured in a special report on property, published in The Economist. His co-authored study, “Lessons from Over 30 Years of Buy versus Rent Decisions: Is the American Dream Always Wise?,” will be published in a forthcoming issue of Real Estate Economics.

Suchismita Mishra, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, has been elected as a director for the Eastern Finance Association. She will officially assume the position immediately following the organization’s annual meeting.

Arun Prakash, Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, has been chosen to receive the first annual “UGS Provost Award for Mentorship of Graduate Students.” He was informed that his “mentoring activities demonstrate your profound dedication to mentoring of FIU’s graduate students.”

Department of Management and International Business

An article titled “The Lure of Brazilian Agriculture” by Jerry Haar, associate dean for international affairs and projects, professor and research fellow, appeared in LatinBusinessChronicle.com. He was also quoted extensively in an article titled “International trade likely to flow faster after major recovery” in Miami Today.

Research by Nathan Hiller, assistant professor and faculty director of FIU’s Center for Leadership High Potential Program, was quoted extensively in an article titled “Tips for Developing High-Potential Talent” in FoxBusiness.com and in a segment on FoxNews.com.

Dileep Rao, clinical professor and author of Bootstrap to Billions, received the “IEEE-USA Entrepreneur Achievement Award” at the IEEE-USA annual meeting in Austin, Texas. He was recognized for his “for contributions in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation and development of future engineering businesses.”

School of Accounting

Robert W. McGee, associate professor, and his research assistant Adriana M. Ross, a student in the Executive Master of Science in Taxation program, submitted six manuscripts for presentation at the 2011 Spring International Conference of the Allied Academies, to be held in Orlando, April 6-8; all were accepted. In addition, the paper titled “A Six-Country Study on Education Level and Ethical Attitude toward Tax Evasion” won the “Distinguished Research Award” in the category of Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Issues and has been accepted for publication in Journal of Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Issues, which has an acceptance rate of 25 percent. The five other papers accepted for presentation at the conference are “A Demographic Study of Polish Attitudes toward Tax Evasion,” “Attitudes toward Tax Evasion in Switzerland: A Demographic Study,” “A Demographic Study of South African Attitudes on Tax Evasion,” “A Demographic Study of the Netherlands Attitudes toward Tax Evasion” and “A Demographic Study of Malaysian Views on the Ethics of Tax Evasion.”
