School of Accounting

Yunhao Chen, assistant professor, and Xiaoquan Jiang, assistant professor, Department of Finance and Real Estate, won a 2011 Kauffman Professorship for their proposal titled “Risk assessment and business valuation of new entrepreneur companies in Latin America and South Florida.”

Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems

Faisal Kaleem, adjunct, was interviewed on CBS 12 on May 6, 2011, speaking about spying on cell phones. An article accompanying the video report is titled Spying on you: Cell phone snoops.

Department of Finance and Real Estate

William Hardin, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, was quoted on both Marketplace Morning Report and Marketplace PM Edition on May 17, 2011. He spoke about the recovery from the real estate crash in Broward County. The nationally syndicated programs air on American Public Media. He was also featured in an ad in The Miami Herald on May 23, 2011, part of a series of that ran from May 17-31 and showcased 15 FIU faculty members as part of the university’s Worlds Ahead brand campaign.

At the annual ARES (American Real Estate Society) meeting, Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, received the Red Pen Award for outstanding service and contribution to the Journal of Housing Research and the best paper, Journal of Real Estate Research, for 2010. He was also appointed as the new editor of the Journal of Housing Research, which publishes scholarly works in the discipline of real estate. An article titled “Buy vs. rent: These days, buying wins” appeared on CNN Money on May 13, 2011. It quoted his research extensively and was picked up by more than 125 broadcast media websites.

A research proposal by Xiaoquan Jiang, assistant professor and Yunhao Chen, School of Accounting, won 2011 Kauffman Professorship. The proposal is titled “Risk assessment and business valuation of new entrepreneur companies in Latin America and South Florida.”

Department of Management and International Business

Ed Glab, clinical professor of business and director of the Global Energy Security Forum in FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), was in Equatorial Guinea May 9-13, 2011 conducting emergency response communication seminars for Mobil. He conducted similar seminars for ExxonMobil last year in Africa and Macau.

William Newburry, associate professor and SunTrust Bank Professor, co-chaired the Strategic Management Society’s special conference in Rio de Janeiro, which took place March 11-13, 2011. The conference theme was “Latin America’s Burgeoning Role in Global Development,” and focused on the role of Latin American multinationals in the emerging world economy. The conference had more than 150 participants—97 from seven Latin America countries, 38 from the United States and Canada, 18 from Europe, three from Australia and two from India. A number of the college’s faculty members and graduate students reviewed proposals; some also presented papers. These included Marcelo Alvarado-Vargas, Armando Borda, Sokol Celo, Wei He, Keith Kelley, Sumit Kundu, Abrahim Soleimani, Yannick Thams, Yu-Kai Wang, Kun Yang and Rimi Zakaria.

Department of Marketing

Stephen Barnett, visiting professor, won a 2011 Kauffman Professorship for his proposal “Development of an MBA specialization/concentration in family business.”
