Kannan Raghunandan, professor and Ryder Eminent Scholar Chair in Business Leadership, was recently appointed to a team that is helping the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) set standards related to the preparation and issuing of audit reports by registered public accounting firms.
Stewart Appelrouth, Manuel Dieguez, Meghna Singhvi and Shawn Wolf have joined the School of Accounting as adjuncts.
Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems
Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor and director of health management programs, and Gloria Deckard, associate professor, had their co-authored article “Healthcare Managers’ Perceptions of Professional Development and Organizational Support” published in the summer issue of Journal of Health and Human Services Administration. In addition, their co-authored paper ”Leadership Development Initiatives Underlie Individual and System Performance in a U.S. Public Healthcare Delivery System” has been accepted for publication in Leadership in Health Services. They are editing a casebook, Case Studies in Organizational Behavior in Health Services Organizations.
In June, Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor and director of health management programs, co-presented “Developing Students’ Competencies through a Nontraditional Case Study” at the 2011 Association of University Programs in Health Administration’s annual meeting in Charleston, South Carolina.
Gloria Deckard, associate professor, has been named associate dean for the R. Kirk Landon Undergraduate Business School at the start of the 2011-12 academic year, a position held by Clifford Perry for the past ten years. He will return to the faculty.
Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, and Gloria Deckard, associate professor, were featured in an article titled “FIU College of Business Professors Awarded Contract from AHCA” (Agency for Health Care Administration) in South Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report, which appeared on June 20, 2011. The article describes the three-year, $495,980 grant to evaluate the statewide health information exchange being put in by Harris for the State of Florida.
Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, was an invited panelist at the 24th annual eConference in Bled, Slovenia, June 12-15, 2011. The session was titled “Independent eHealth Solutions: Is an Integration Necessary?”

Department of Finance and Real Estate
Research by Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, has been featured in a number of outlets recently. He was a guest blogger for the KCM Blog, published on July 12, 2011, addressing Bringing the Sale Across the Finish Line. His research about renting versus buying was cited on a Reuters blog in an article titled “Rent vs buy datapoint of the day” on July 20, 2011; and on a Wall Street Journal blog in an entry titled “Secondary Sources: Rent vs. Buy, Debt Thresholds, Gang of Six Plan,” and in The Atlantic in an article titled For the Past 30 Years, Renting Was Generally Better Than Buying, both of which appeared on July 21, 2011. On July 22, 2011, he commented on the same topic on The Miami Herald Friday Business Report on WLRN.

Department of Management and International Business
Jerry Haar, associate dean for international affairs and projects, professor and research fellow, has been named director of the Eugenio Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center. An announcement of the appointment and details about his career appeared in a World City article titled “FIU names Haar to lead its Pino Entrepreneurship Center” on July 19, 2011. Also, his article “Canada: A True Partner,” was published LatinBusinessChronicle.com on July 20, 2011.
“Are you a level VI leader,” an article by Modesto A. Maidique, FIU president emeritus, professor and Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, and executive director, FIU Center for Leadership, was published in Harvard Business School Working Knowledge (HBSWK) on July 6, 2011. Since it was published the article has garnered worldwide attention with requests for e-distribution coming in from several locations including India. As a result, a robust and prolific conversation has developed among HBSWK readers and across the Internet. The article was listed first as HBSWK’s “Most popular articles”. A leadership typology assessment based on the “Whom Do You Serve?” model is in development in collaboration with other FIU faculty. Maidique anticipates having a brief and preliminary assessment based on his collaboration with Nathan Hiller, assistant professor, to be completed by early spring 2012. Galen Kroeck, department chair, will be assisting in developing a fully-validated measure with an expected completion date of late fall 2012.

Department of Marketing
A co-authored paper by Alexandra Aguirre Rodriguez, assistant professor, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Research. Titled “Moderators of the Self-Congruity Effect on Consumer Decision-Making: A Meta-Analysis,” the paper is slated for publication online in fall 2010 and paper publication in spring 2012.
