“Employers often tell us that some of their companies’ best performers are graduates of Florida International University (FIU),” said Dawn Lazar (MS ’06), assistant director, Career Management Services, School of Accounting. “Our Ahead of the Game Expo lets recruiters meet ideal candidates from FIU’s accounting, finance and management information systems (MIS) programs.”
The Ahead of the Game Accounting and Business Expo, the third of its kind, was held on campus on September 29th. More than 370 students registered for the event, giving them an ideal chance to interact with representatives from thirty highly rated companies.
“Only accounting, finance and MIS students can attend,” Lazar said. “They must sign-up for the expo in advance and are qualified only if have a 3.0 GPA or better, are registered with Career Management Services, have an approved résumé and are less than one year before or after graduation.”
Two student accounting organizations in the College of Business Administration hosted the expo: Beta Alpha Psi, the international accounting honor society, and ALPFA at FIU /ALPFA Honor Society for accounting, finance and business related majors.
“Candidates have the chance to learn about opportunities available at outstanding companies,” said event co-organizer Abraham Grimaldo, president-elect of Beta Alpha Psi. “They can present themselves, personally hand over a résumé and talk with recruiters.”
“As the students enter the Expo, you can tell they’re nervous,” said Kevin Zamora, president-elect of ALPFA at FIU, who organized the event with Grimaldo. “But once they start meeting with the recruiters and see how well regarded FIU students are, the nervousness turns into high energy.”
The fourth Ahead of the Game Accounting and Business Expo will take place January 27, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
