Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam was featured along with nine other deans of business schools in an article titled “Ten on Ten,” which appeared in the November/December issue of BizEd, a publication of AACSB. Her section was called “Where is IT taking us?”

Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor and director of graduate health management programs, served as a panelist on the topics “Medical Tourism: The Globalization of Healthcare” and “International Healthcare—Greater Miami as a Destination” for the South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum’s (SFHEF) October educational session at Memorial Hospital Miramar and the Doral Business Council’s Third Annual Healthcare Roundtable at the College of Business Administration, respectively. In November, she served as the panel moderator for the topic “Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness in Your Hospital,” which was sponsored by SFHEF and hosted by University of Miami’s (UM) Tissue Bank at the new UM Life Science & Technology Park. Her paper, co-authored with Gloria Deckard, associate professor and associate dean, Landon Undergraduate School of Business; and another colleague, and titled “Modifying physician behavior to improve cost efficiency in safety-net ambulatory settings” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Ambulatory Care Management.
Department of Finance and Real Estate
Deanne Butchey, senior lecturer and assistant dean, assurance of learning and accreditation, received a special award at the annual faculty awards luncheon on October 20, 2011. It was the second time the award was given to a faculty member/administrator; two years ago, Joyce J. Elam, executive dean and James L. Knight Eminent Scholar Chair in Management Information Systems, was the first recipient. Sushil Gupta, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems, presented the award.
Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, has been cited extensively in the press. He was quoted in a November 4th article in CNN Money titled “‘I’m home!’ Adult children move back in,” which examined the impact of this social trend on the rental market. On November 10 in Miami Today, he was featured in an article titled “Demand for distressed residences seen absorbing any to come.” After he spoke at the National Association of Realtors (NAR) annual conference, held November 11-14 in Anaheim, California, on the topic “Buyer or Renter Nation,” CNN Money and others published an article titled “Is Las Vegas’ housing market ready to make a comeback?” A widely published press release from NAR quoted him on the subject “US will remain a nation of homeowners.” In addition, he was quoted in a November 28th article by a MarketWatch reporter. Titled “Making a New Case for Home Buying,” the article also appeared on WSJ.com.

At the invitation of the Canadian government, Ed Glab, clinical professor, visited the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta province from November 6-11, 2011. He is organizing a conference about the oil sands and the Keystone Pipeline to take place on the Modesto A. Maidique campus on February 21, 2012.
Jerry Haar, associate dean for international affairs and projects, professor and research fellow, was interviewed on “The Neal Asbury Show” on November 11, 2011, speaking about the Obama administration’s jobs bill. The program airs on Truth for America. His article “Latin America embraces mobile money” appeared in Latin Business Chronicle on October 25, 2011.
“Who needs a ticker: seven reasons not to go public,” by Dileep Rao, clinical professor, appeared in the November 7, 2011 issue of Forbes. Also, he was quoted in a Star Tribune article, “Pad & Quill is riding the iPad surge,” which appeared on November 27th.
“Individualism-collectivism as a moderator of the work demands-strains relationship: a cross-level and cross-national examination,” a manuscript by Juan I. Sanchez, professor and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Chair in Management, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), a premier journal and UT Dallas-ranked. This study of more than 9,000 managers in 31 nations demonstrates the role of cultural differences in the stress management process. His monograph—the first monograph on job analysis research ever to be published in the Annual Review—has been accepted for publication in the January 2012 issue of Annual Review of Psychology. This is the second Annual Review monograph in the history of FIU whose first author is concurrently an FIU faculty member and the third monograph in any of the 40+ disciplines covered by Annual Review journals ever authored by a faculty member under the FIU affiliation. On November 6th and 7th, in Washington, DC, he attended the annual meeting of the U.S. State Department’s Board of Examiners, on which he serves as a public member. He also attended a meeting of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Occupational Information Advisory Panel, to which he was appointed in June 2011. The meeting took place September 20-22, 2011, in the SSA headquarters in Baltimore, MD.
From October 30 through November 5, 2011, Mary Ann Von Glinow, professor and Knight Ridder Eminent Scholar Chair in International Management, was in Hong Kong where she ran a colloquium for the DBA program at City University of Hong Kong (CUHK), an event covered by the Hong Kong Economic Times, a major business newspaper in Hong Kong. The purpose of the colloquium was for the DBA community to share their learnings with their Hong Kong learning community on the relevance of their doctoral research for practice, and not just research, purposes. She also spoke at the event on “Rigor vs Relevance: the critical role of high level doctoral research that has an applied and rigorous focus.” The other speakers were all CEOs of large multinationals headquartered in Hong Kong who have returned to CUHK to work on their doctoral theses on topics of relevance; she served on one of those doctoral dissertation committees and is working with Kuldeep Kumar, professor, Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems with a joint appointment at CUHK; and Brian Li, CEO of Goldpeak Electronics Ltd (GPE), to transform his study about the globalization of GPE into an article publishable in a top-tier journal. Also, on October 27th, as president of AIB, she delivered the “State of the State of AIB” keynote speech to the AIB Southeast USA Chapter at a meeting at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida.

Andrew Yap, adjunct, is mentioned in an article about his father that is titled “George Yap: Changing lives through employment,” which appeared in the Jamaica Observer. George Yap is executive chairman of LEASA Industries Ltd., a family business of which Andrew Yap is the president.

Robert W. McGee, associate professor, has been appointed editor-in chief of Open Ethics Journal (a Bentham journal). He recently completed a PhD in applied global ethics at Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds, England.
Center for Leadership
Modesto A. Maidique, executive director of the center, president emeritus of FIU and Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership, Department of Management and International Business; Mayra Beers (PhD ’11, MA ’95), the center’s director; and Jeffrey Thomas, formerly a graduate research assistant with the center, did a poster presentation titled “The Leaders Toolbox: A Deconstruction of High-Stakes CEO Decision-Making” at the Society of Judgment and Decision-Making in Seattle, November 4-7, 2011.
