He had just moved to Miami from Georgia two weeks earlier to begin studies in the Chapman Graduate School of Business in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU).
But in one evening, Dinesh Hasija met faculty members and administrators, received important information, had his first chance to meet classmates—and was welcomed by FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. Hasija is among 510 new students admitted to business school and invited to the Spring 2012 Orientation held on January 6th.
“I was impressed with everything about the event,” said Hasija, who chose FIU for the Master of International Business course of study, one of 14 graduate programs available. “I appreciated the opportunity to feel more at home by getting to know FIU people. Plus I found out practical details I needed to know.”
The reception included dinner for the 220 students attending the orientation. Additional welcomes came from Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam; Lakshmi Reddi, dean of the university graduate school; and Stephen Barnett, executive faculty director for MBA programs.
Students attended breakout sessions to meet with faculty in their particular program of study; Rosenberg visited many of these gatherings.
Giveaways, raffle prizes and a visit from FIU mascot Roary added to the enjoyment of the evening.
Event continues to improve.
“We plan the evening to provide the attendees with information about what to expect as an FIU graduate student and to give them a sense of belonging,” said organizer Milza Rosales, senior manager, Office of Admissions and Recruitment. “We continually look for ways to improve every aspect of the orientation.”
She pointed out that new elements were offered in this semester’s event, such as attendees being able to receive their Panther One card on the spot.
“That’s especially convenient for students attending classes in Broward and at our new FIU Downtown on Brickell facility,” she said.
“Events such as this one are an important part of what we call the ‘contextual curriculum’ designed to support the academic curriculum and create our vision for an active learning community,” Barnett said.
