Angel Burgos joins FIU business as executive director, MBA programs.

In his role as executive director, MBA programs, Angel Burgos will manage the college’s portfolio of MBA offerings including the Executive (EMBA), Professional (PMBA), International (IMBA) and online programs targeted to working professionals. He will also have overall management responsibility for the Master of International Business (MIB) program.

“I was drawn to the job by the quality of the leadership team, the MBA programs team and the fact that Florida International University (FIU) has the vision, plans and expertise to move to the next level of excellence,” he said. “Also, the business school has a clear growth plan for graduate education with new facilities that will make the MBA programs even more attractive.”

Burgos brings more than 15 years of experience in managing graduate programs, most recently as director of MBA and MS in accounting programs for the George Mason University School of Management. Prior to that, he contributed to the graduate programs for the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University.

A graduate of the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs with a master’s degree in public administration, he is working on his dissertation proposal in the doctoral program in education at George Mason University. Beyond the academic world, he was a Javits Senatorial Fellow for U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman.

“I am really excited to be here,” he said. “FIU is a clearly a dynamic university that is plugged into both the community at large and the business community in particular. It understands what it means to relate to and challenge a diverse and growing student body, especially those in graduate education.”

Cristina Raecke named executive director, marketing and communications.

Energy, growth, passion, nimbleness, clear sense of its mission, the ability to harness and embrace growth and a commitment to the community.

Those are some of the attributes of the college that attracted Cristina Raecke to FIU Business, where she now holds the position of executive director, marketing and communications.

Raised in Miami, she had always known about FIU and is excited to head the business school’s department responsible for the college’s publications, the web, event marketing, and the development and implementation of the marketing strategies for both graduate and undergraduate programs.

“I see our department as an internal agency,” Raecke said. “We have many clients within the college, and I want to ensure that our team serves them in the most effective way.”

Another aspect of her short-term plan for the college focuses on research.

“We will undertake an in-depth research effort to enable us to fully understand our market, and then rebrand FIU Business while conforming to FIU guidelines,” she said.

Raecke, who holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Richmond and an MBA from University of Texas at Austin, has worked in the telecommunications industry with Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks as well as with the law firm of Greenburg Traurig. She was manager of marketing and communications for Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision; manager for marketing and community relations for the Miami Downtown Development Authority; and director of recruiting and admissions for the University of Miami’s MBA programs.

For the many positive characteristics she sees in the college, the deep involvement in the community strikes her as one of the most important, and she is “very happy to be part of that effort.”

Marketing and Communications Department also adds new assistant director.

Ellen Forman

“Telling stories about new ideas and great accomplishments is the work I love most, so I am thrilled to see how many exciting stories there are to tell at the college,” said Ellen Forman, newly appointed assistant director, media relations and communications. “That includes the work of our faculty, our motivated students and unique programs that reach out into both the local and global business communities and truly make a difference.”

Forman was a senior reporter on the business staff of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and covered financial news for Women’s Wear Daily in New York. As a freelancer her work appeared in The Miami Herald, the Chicago Tribune, Redbook Magazine and dozens of other publications. In addition, she served as a consultant to FIU Business, playing a central role on the media team for the Americas Venture Capital Conference, and has helped generate local and national media attention for several new programs and faculty research projects in the business school.

“I’m also looking forward to working with FIU Media Relations to get the word out about all the things that make the business school an outstanding place to study and work,” she said.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Forman received a Master of Science degree with a concentration in business and economics journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and journalism from Binghamton University (SUNY).

Raquel Wright-Mair is new assistant director, alumni relations.

Raquel Wright-Mair

Raquel Wright-Mair (MSc ’08) has been named assistant director of alumni relations in the college’s Office of Advancement, Alumni and Corporate Relations.

“I intend to become the face of the college for anything to do with alumni so that our graduates will know there is always someone they can contact,” Wright said.

Among her duties, she will be a liaison with the FIU Alumni Association, reach out to alumni in all geographies; manage the chapter boards and the college’s mentoring program; and work on the annual Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, the college’s largest annual alumni event. She also plans to increase the office’s social media efforts.

A five-year veteran of several jobs at FIU—including with FIU Career Services, the Women’s Center and the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services—Wright saw the opportunity in FIU Business as “a great position in a respected and admired college,” further noting that “the team is amazing.”

Though she has only held the job since January 2012, she has already been meeting alumni from the earliest classes to the most recent.

“I want to ignite the fire they have for the college and ensure they keep strong ties with us,” she said.

Wright holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and politics from Ithaca College—a dramatic change from her native Jamaica—a master’s degree in higher education administration (MSc) from FIU and completed a master’s internship at Harvard University.
