If you ask physicians and healthcare administrators to spend an entire workday away from their busy worlds, you better make sure the event is highly beneficial.
“I found this event to be extremely worthwhile, for clinicians and administrators to learn best practices around the county,” said internal medicine physician Deborah Gracia.
She and 80 other CEOs, CMOs and health care executives from South Florida’s health centers attended the “2012 Trends in Patient Care” on January 18, 2012. The event was part of a Health Care Quality Institute series being presented at Florida International University (FIU) by Health Choice Network in partnership with FIU’s Colleges of Business Administration and Medicine.
“As clinicians, we often talk among ourselves about innovations to improve patient care but it’s important to hear from experts about what’s really working,” Gracia said.
Some top specialists provided information on improving patient care, including topics such as establishing a patient-centered medical home, planned care visits and accountable care organizations.
National presenters included Seiji Hayashi, chief medical director for the U.S. Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) in Washington, D.C. and Adele Allison, national director of government affairs of SuccessEHS. Also from BPHC were Suma Nair, director of the office of quality and data, and Felicia Collins, senior clinical advisor for the central southeast division.
“To hear right from national government officials about mandates, EHRs and other issues and to see the support being afforded to networks like ours was extremely valuable,” said Edwin Bosa-Osorio, CMO, clinical affairs, at the Jessie Trice Community Health Center.
South Florida presenters included FIU faculty members Nancy Borkowski, director, Health Management Programs, and Yolangel Hernandez-Suarez, associate dean, Graduate Medical Education.
“This event gave senior health center leadership the latest information on trends specific to our industry, including reimbursement, medical home standards and new technologies,” said Kevin Kearns, CEO of Health Choice Network. “Discussing all these topics at one event brings a lot of value to the table.”
