It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of Daniel Zamora (BACC ’10) on August 4, 2012.
Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador on January 9, 1989, he had just completed the Master of Accounting (MACC) program in the College of Business at Florida International University (FIU). A posthumous award of his graduate degree will take place during the Summer Commencement ceremonies on August 14, 2012.
Zamora was an account manager at CPA By Choice in Miami and also was serving as a graduate assistant in both the Career Management Services office and for the graduate accounting programs.
As both an undergraduate and graduate student, he was actively involved in student activities, notably as president of the college’s chapter of ALPFA. In 2009, he was named National Student of the Year by the organization.
In accepting the honor, he said, “It’s not an award for me; it’s for everyone who helped me—our executive board, the student members and the School of Accounting—without whom I would never have achieved any of this.”
“Daniel already had accomplished a great deal and had enormous potential,” said Ruth Ann McEwen, director of the School of Accounting. “He was respected by all, cherished by many and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.”
Zamora’s family has established the Daniel Zamora Foundation to aid some of the causes that were important to him. Also, a scholarship for outstanding scholar-athletes will be established at his high school, Christopher Columbus.
He is survived by his mother Iliana; his father Colon; his brothers Colon, Mikey and Kevin, an FIU student; and other family members.
