Business students learn the art of professional dressing.

Leticia Romano, a junior majoring in marketing and international business at Florida International University (FIU), learned quite a bit as a co-coordinator of the Alpha Kappa Psi “From Paris to Tokyo Professional Fashion Show.” She discovered how to plan events, coordinate show elements and build relationships with sponsors.

Plus she learned that not everybody knows a woman should not wear open-toed shoes to a job interview.

“The fashion show presented how to dress in business casual, business professional and cocktail attire,” said Romano, describing the event of September 25, 2012, at the Graham Center Ballroom. “For some attendees, the runway show was their introduction to the topic. For others, the experience taught them nuances, such as the importance of not wearing a suit that’s too tight.”

“Many people think they know business attire but might not realize minor details,” said Amada Acosta, a senior with a minor in marketing, co-coordinator for the event. “During the comedy portion, which dealt with what not to wear, men saw how to always coordinate their shoes, belt and socks.”

Over 100 people attended the event, the second annual offering, with part of the proceeds benefiting His House Children’s Home, a non-profit organization helping children and families in crisis. Mohales Deis, president of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity in FIU’s College of Business, originated the idea.

The theme provided planners with ideas for promotions, staging and music.

Many pitch in to ensure success.

Serving as co-hosts for the evening were Andres Agudelo (BBA ’12) and Nicole Vega, who was named Miss Miami 2011. Ms. Brickell, Denise Gonzalez, helped with auditions, was a runway coach and modeled. Students Arene Khouma and Marguerite Tall helped on the planning committee.

Sponsors included Brooks Brothers, Flamingo’s Formal Wear, Old Navy, Best Buy, Paul Mitchell Beauty School, Blade Barbershop, FunClick, Kathy’s Kakery, Bobbi Brown and Fancy Fusion Parties & Events.

“The art of dressing in a professional manner is critically important to those entering the business world,” Romano said. “Our event was fun, informative and raised awareness and funds for His House Children’s Home.”
