On March 4, 2013, renowned thinker Ray Kurzweil spoke at Florida International University (FIU) on “The acceleration of technology in the 21st century: the impact on business, the economy and society.” The College of Business was a co-sponsor.
Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems, was one of three panelists invited to give a one-minute response to the talk.
With expertise in both business and technology—especially related to healthcare IT— she opted to “focus on things that had implications to business.”
“Rapid logarithmic change in IT is fundamentally changing the definition of competition,” she said. “Only the truly creative and innovative will be able to survive. An upstart will be able to make you obsolete in a day, especially since you don’t have to have huge amounts of funding.”
