School of Accounting

Jimmy Carmenate, clinical instructor, has been named Outstanding Faculty Advisor of the Year by the national office of Beta Alpha Psi, the honor society for accounting, finance and information sciences students. Carmenate serves as faculty advisor to the FIU student chapter, which recently achieved Gold Chapter status for two consecutive years.

Department of Finance

John S. Zdanowicz, professor, was invited to be part of a speaker’s forum on May 24, 2016, for members of the Investigation Division of the Office of the District Attorney, County of New York. Zdanowicz’s topic was Trade-Based Money Laundering. Approximately 50 people from the Major Economic Crimes Bureaus and the Frauds, Rackets and Cybercrimes Bureaus were invited to attend. That same day Zdanowicz met with a smaller group of Assistant District Attorneys to discuss TBML typologies.

Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics

A paper by Keum Kang, assistant professor, “Postponable Acceptance and Assignment: A Stochastic Dynamic Programming Approach” was accepted for publication by the Manufacturing & Service Operations Management journal.

Hemang Subramanian, assistant professor, is co-author of a paper entitled “Electronic Commerce, Spatial Arbitrage, and Market Efficiency” which was accepted to the Information Systems Research (ISR) Journal on May 24, 2016.

Monica E. Tremblay, chair and associate professor, was guest editor of a special edition of the Journal of American Informatics Association (JAMIA) which appeared July 1, 2015. Also, for that journal, Tremblay co-authored an article “Health informatics and analytics — building a program to integrate business analytics across clinical and administrative disciplines” along with associate professors Gloria Deckard and Richard E. Klein Jr. This article profiled the FIU Health Informatics program.

Department of Management and International Business

Jerry Haar, professor, wrote an op ed column entitled “Smart cities – transforming urban growth and development” which appeared in Miami Today on May 5, 2016.

Nathan Hiller, associate professor and academic director for FIU Center for Leadership, was quoted in Cindy Krisher Goodman’s column “Transparency is key to employee trust” which appeared in the Miami Herald on May 8, 2016.

Samantha Paustian-Underdahl, assistant professor, presented her research “How do Women and Ethnic Minority Leaders Cope with Identity Threat? Redefining the Conditions of the Queen Bee Effect” to Dublin City University’s Leadership & Talent Institute in Dublin, Ireland on May 18, 2016.

Department of Marketing

Carlos M. Parra, clinical professor in Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics and in the Department of Marketing, was quoted in an article entitled “Young Pioneers: How Cuban Entrepreneurs Are ‘InCubating’ In Miami” by Tim Padgett which appeared on WRLN.com on June 20, 2016.

Kimberly Taylor, associate professor, was quoted in an article, “Shark attack: Every week is shark week in South Florida” by Johnny Diaz which appeared in the South Florida Sun Sentinel on June 22, 2016.

Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate

William Hardin, professor and director, along with Eli Beracha and Julia Freybote, assistant professors, participated at the 23rd Annual Conference of the European Real Estate Society Meeting in Regensburg. Germany, June 8-11, 2016. As part of the conference, Hardin was a featured speaker at the 12th Annual International Real Estate Business School’s Research Symposium. His topic was “The Potential of Big Data for Real Estate Business Models.” Others speakers include international academics and industry leaders including the President of the global real estate services firm JLL.

Eli Beracha was quoted in an article by Paul Owers titled “Home sales down across South Florida in April” which appeared in the SunSentinel on May 20, 2016.

William Hardin was quoted in the article entitled “Miami’s Condo Frenzy Ends With Inventory Piling Up in New Towers” which appeared in Bloomberg News on May 27, 2016.
