To foster the ongoing achievement of its internationally-recognized faculty and programs, FIU Business will reorganize the Department of Management and International Business (MIB) into two independent units, with International Business and Strategy faculty in one department and Human Resources Management and Organizational Behavior faculty in the other.
Dean Joanne Li announced the decision after reviewing the findings of a task force of department faculty members.
“The ‘Best of Two Worlds’ strategy is designed to allow our faculty members to sharpen their focus on excellence within individual programs as we support the vision of FIU Business as a world-class business college,” she said.
Li became dean of FIU Business in May 2017. After learning that discussions about a restructuring of the department had been ongoing for some time, she convened a task force to engage faculty in an appreciative enquiry, with the goal of creating an organization that would “bring even higher levels of success and achievement to our faculty, our students, and our college,” she said.
Rankings achievement in international business and human resources management.
FIU’s International Business and Management programs have both achieved Top 10 rankings as well as research excellence. U.S. News & World Report ranked FIU’s undergraduate international program #7 in its 2018 Best Colleges ranking, and the program has been ranked in the top 10 five times in the past six years. Recently, HR.com gave #1 rankings to both FIU’s Master of Science in Human Resources Management graduate degree and its undergraduate human resource management program. MIB faculty members hold leadership positions in international research organizations and journal editorial boards, and are widely published in premier academic journals.
MIB Department Chair William Newburry is overseeing the reorganization process, and will continue to lead the International Business and Strategy faculty once it is completed. A search committee will be convened for a Human Resources Management and Organizational Behavior chair, and a new chair will be in place by the start of Fall 2018, Li said.
