As more women move up the organizational ladder, they need to bring strong leadership skills along with them.
Last November, 21 women came together for the fifth “Women on the Move” program to bolster their upwardly mobile professional journey with new insights and tools.
The Center for Leadership and the office of Executive and Professional Education in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU) developed and presented the four-day leadership program.
“‘Women on the Move’ focuses on helping women identify their strengths and leveraging these for continuous personal and professional development,” said Garth D. Headley (MS ’07), director of programs, Center for Leadership.
Current and future leaders share what it takes to soar professionally.
The program offered a packed agenda designed to provide a framework for discussing the unique challenges and choices women face as they take on leadership roles. The goal? To help attendees develop a personal plan for advancement.
Guest speaker Carmen Gonzalez-Sanfeliu, vice president, Latin America and Caribbean, INTELSAT, shared experiences from her 20 years in the satellite telecommunications industry, where she now leads a sales force that drives more than $350 million in revenues. Other activities included roundtable discussions led by Joyce J. Elam, executive dean, plus executive coaching seminars and sessions covering topics such as building strengths-based leadership models, managing work and connecting with others.
“I really think the program is ideal for new managers with new or increased responsibilities who now find themselves having to manage people at all levels of the organization,” said attendee Olga Corpion, executive director, human resources, Ingram Micro Inc. “The tools they’ll acquire will be unbelievably useful for the success and progress of their careers.”
