John Zdanowicz, professor and Florida International Bankers Association Chair, has continued to contribute to work on the topic of trade-based money laundering. His article “Trade-based Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing” appeared in Review of Law & Economics, one of the top premier law journals in the world. On February 24, 2010, he met with three senior officials—director-general, head of cabinet and senior public prosecutor—of the Swedish Economic Crime Authority, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. On March 4, 2010, in Amsterdam, he was the keynoter speaker at an international gathering of more than 50 attendees, including ministers of customs and finance from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom; and on March 31, 2010, he conducted a global webinar titled “Detecting and Understanding the Mechanics of Trade-Based Money Laundering,” for AML Services International LLC. On March 19, 2010, he met with Sarah K. Runge, policy advisor, Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, U.S. Department of the Treasury. In late April, he is scheduled to meet with a five-person delegation from Pakistan looking at terrorism financing. In addition, an article titled “Illicit Money: Can It Be Stopped?,” which appeared in the December 3, 2009 issue of The New York Review of Books, cited his research.
Management and International Business
The State Department has asked Juan I. Sanchez, professor and Knight Ridder Byron Harless Eminent Scholar Chair in Management, to serve a five-year term as one of the five public members in the Board of Examiners for the Foreign Service. The board’s responsibilities include periodic review of prescribed examinations for appointment of the Foreign Service.
LEASA Industries Co., Inc., of which Andrew P. Yap, lecturer, is president, received the “Outstanding Minority Business of the Year (Large)” from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. An awards luncheon honored the winners of the Top 100 Minority Business Awards on March 12, 2010 at Jungle Island. LEASA was one of eight companies recognized.
