Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems
At the invitation of the Secretary of Defense (DoD), Robert M. Gates, Irma Becerra-Fernandez (PhD ’94 ), professor and Pino Entrepreneurship Center director and fellow, will serve on the National Multidisciplinary Committee. The committee will assist DoD in conducting an independent assessment—mandated by Congress—of the participation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions in DoD’s research and educational programs.

Ed Glab, clinical professor of business and international and public affairs, was a panelist at the 2010 International Conference on Renewable Energy in Miami on November 5, 2010. The conference was titled OnlySustainable; Glab was part of a panel on bioenergy, which was moderated by Brian C. Dean, president, Gateway Florida and U.S. executive director of the Interamerican Ethanol Commission.
An article titled Sad state of universities, written by Jerry Haar, associate dean for international affairs and projects, professor and research fellow, about Latin American universities, appeared in The Miami Herald on November 1, 2010.
Dileep Rao, clinical professor, had an article titled “How can Florida produce more Fortune 500 firms?” published in The Miami Herald on November 1, 2010.

In November, the department hosted a series of seminars including Li Dai, University of Toronto, who spoke on “Caught in the Crossfire: Multinational Enterprise Strategy in Warring Host Countries”; Byungchae Jin, Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, whose topic was “Social Movements, Institutional Logics and the Emergence of Electric and Hybrid Drive in the Electric Automotive Community from 1969-2009”; and Ronaldo Parente, Rutgers University, who discussed “Relational Resources, Tacit Knowledge Integration Capabilities and Business Performance.” Aya Chacar, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, organizes the seminars.
