Teresa Hernandez, a student in the Master of Accounting (MACC) program, and Robert W. McGee, associate professor, presented three papers at an international conference in Dallas, TX from April 19-22, 2012, sponsored by the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines. One of the papers, “The Ethics of Accepting a Bribe: An Empirical Study of Opinion in the USA, Brazil, Germany and China,” won a research award.
Decision Sciences and Information Systems
Nancy Borkowski, clinical associate professor, and Jean Gordon, visiting faculty administrator, were two of the co-authors on a paper titled “Assessing Human Capital Needs: a Study of Capacity Development among Canada’s Community-Based First Nations Health Managers,” which was presented at the 8th International Organisational Behaviour in Healthcare Conference, held in Dublin, Ireland April 15-17, 2012.
Sushil Gupta, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, received the first Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) Distinguished Service Award. The 28 members of the POMS board, from around the world, voted unanimously that he should be the first recipient and also that he be the last because the board also unanimously voted to rename the award the Sushil K. Gupta POMS Distinguished Service Award “to honor him for his dedicated services to POMS.” A founding member of this international professional organization, he has played a key role in its initiation, development and growth, serving as executive director since 1997 and as a member of the advisory board of the POMS Journal. He was elected a POMS Fellow in 2004, the year the fellowship was inaugurated. The award ceremony, which was captured on video, took place at the Twenty Third Annual Conference, held in Chicago, IL April 20-23, 2012.
Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, was honored as a Top Scholar at a reception on April 9, 2012 at which FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg recognized more than two dozen distinguished members of the FIU academic community for their outstanding achievements in research and scholarship. Tremblay was among the “young faculty with significant research” with the citation noting “her research on data analytics and business intelligence; data and text mining; data quality; data warehousing; decision support systems; and knowledge management, particularly in the context of healthcare.” Tremblay, with Gloria Deckard, associate professor, was featured in two webinars “Evaluating a Statewide HIE Implementation,” aimed at all states implementing health information exchanges (HIE), which took place April 11, 2012 and April 13, 2012. Put on by the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, the webinars relate to the work that Tremblay and Deckard have been conducting as part of their $495,980.00 grant from the Agency for Health Care Administration. In addition, Tremblay, along with Arturo Castellanos, graduate assistant and accepted doctoral student into the PhD in Management Information Systems (MIS) program, have launched floridahie-eval.fiu.edu as an assessment tool for the state to monitor the implementation and adoption of HIE by healthcare providers.
An article titled “Nascent Entrepreneurs and the Transition to Entrepreneurship: Why Do People Start New Businesses?” by Steve Zanakis, professor, Maija Renko (PhD ’07) and Amanda Bullough (PhD ’08) has been accepted for publication in the high-quality Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, scheduled to appear in the June 2012 issue. Also, “Engaging Group E-Learning in Virtual Worlds,” a paper by Katherine Franceschi (PhD ’09); Ronald Lee, professor; Zanakis and David Hinds (PhD ’08), and published in the Journal of Management Information Systems, a premier journal, in the summer of 2009 won an Emerald Management Reviews 2010 award; it was named in its Top 50 Journal Articles Worldwide list. Emerald Management Reviews is a vast database of 280,000+ article abstracts from the top 300 management publications worldwide, as selected by an independent accreditation board of industry experts. According to its website, “With 15,000 articles added to the Emerald Management Reviews database annually from around the world, receiving a Citation of Excellence is an extraordinary achievement and represents one of the highest accolades that an author can achieve.” Lee and Zanakis were co-major professors for Franceschi’s dissertation on the topic.

Deanne Butchey (PhD ’05), senior lecturer, was nominated for a Spirit of Service Learning Award from Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida Inc. (RPCVSF). The organization, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year Coalition and the Armando Alejandre Jr. Memorial Foundation, recognizes and honors K-12 and college/university educators for contributing to the integration of service into the curriculum and for making a commitment to connect students through service to help meet critical needs in the South Florida and/or global community.
Ken H. Johnson, associate professor, has been quoted in several publications recently: in the Palm Beach Post “Firm sells former foreclosures in bulk” on April 9, 2012 and “South Florida housing prices have hit bottom, Zillow analysts declare” on April 25, 2012; and on Money Talk News, which has more 80 network-affiliated broadcast channels across the country, in a piece titled “Housing Has Bottomed – It’s Time to Buy” on April 25, 2012.
On March 30, 2012, Helen Simon, senior instructor, participated in an invitational panel at the 2012 Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. II Forum conference held in New York City to discuss innovations in financial education. She covered ways a Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) can facilitate innovative education and further develop students’ critical thinking skills. She specifically spoke about issues presented in That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back, a new book by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum.

Jerry Haar, professor, was quoted in a Bloomberg Businessweek article titled “Argentina Tries the Chavez Way,” which appeared on April 17, 2012. His article “Argentina: Back to the Future” appeared in Latin Business Chronicle on April 24, 2012.
Modesto Maidique, professor and Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership; along with Ken Lipartito, professor, Department of History; Mayra Beers (PhD ’11, MA ’95), director, Center for Leadership; and Candace Atamanik-Dunphy (PhD ’10, MS ’09) research assistant in the center, published a case titled Miami: Leadership in a Global Community, in January 2012. Following the publication of this report, Maidique and the Center for Leadership hosted a summit of more than 80 of Miami’s business, community, and civic leaders to address the concerns Miami faces as a global city. As of this writing, 82 people have signed up for the second summit scheduled for May.
Dileep Rao, clinical professor, was quoted in “As builder healed, his firm grew stronger, too,” an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on April 1, 2012.
Juan I. Sanchez, professor and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Chair in Management, presented two papers at the Annual Conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) in San Diego, CA April 25-27, 2012. One was titled “Eyes of the Beholder? Rater Effects in Work Analysis,” and the second was “Nepotism: Eradicate or Adapt?” He also conducted a SIOP pre-conference workshop with Alexis Fink from Microsoft Corporation titled “Integrated Talent Management through Competencies.” More than 60 conference attendees registered for this workshop, and the proceeds were donated back to SIOP. In addition, Sanchez attended a meeting of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Occupational Information Advisory Panel in Baltimore, MD March 20-21, 2012 at which he continued his advisory role to the Federal Government on the development of a new occupational information system for SSA.

Customer Relationship Management, a fully online course designed by Nancy Rauseo, lecturer, has been recognized as a 2012 Blackboard Exemplary Course. More than 180 faculty/schools entered nominations with only approximately 30 winning the designation. As a winner, she has been invited to attend BbWorld, Blackboard’s annual user conference, which will be held in New Orleans, LA July 10-12, 2012.
